Comments: This was an idea that came to me a while ago, but I wasn't sure exactly how it was going to end. I'm glad I waited, though, because inpsiration soon came through the form of roleplay and I found an ending.
The pain inside, my love denied;
Hopes and dreams swallowed by pride...
Aoi was suave; elegant in every way and incredibly charming. People envied him, constantly wishing to be able to be as poised as him while others craved his prescence. They loved being around Aoi, either swooning or looking up to him. He was scarcely seen alone, often surrounded by two or more people. He was able to mesmerize anyone with a single glance and enthrall them with a flash of that gorgeous smile. He made people want to get to know him, thus gaining a group of admirers that constantly followed to talk to him. It that was the case, then why did he feel so alone?
Ruki. It all came back to him, didn't it? He was the one person he couldn't seem to reach, not able to understand why he wanted the boy to notice him. Despite the numerous attempts of trying to catch his attention, he just couldn't do it. It frustrated Aoi to no end, but he couldn't give up; his pride and stubborness wouldn't let him. Hell, he liked him too much to throw in the towel.
"Why do you want to have his attention so much, Aoi-chan?" Reita asked, his contact-colored eyes focusing on the other. He and Aoi had been friends with him ever since they first met one another in the sixth grade. Reita always looked after Aoi, constantly protecting him from the harsh world and nursing his broken heart for him whenever it was trampled by his past boyfriends. He felt like it was his job to protect him, so seeing his best friend upset over something like this worried him, and made him feel absolutely helpless.
Aoi shrugged as he stared down at his health-concious bento box, paying little attention as he glanced up at to one of their classmates and watched him eat a burger. He had taken up on eating healthy foods as well as excerising rigorously, the time he spent working out slowly increasing each week.
"Why are you putting yourself through this?"
"Through what?" He asked, his attention finally caught by Reita.
"The dieting and excerising. You don't need it; you look great."
Aoi gave him a skeptical look before he began eating his lunch again. Reita frowned when he got no answer, his eyes remaining on his best friend.
"It's because of that Ruki kid, isn't--"
"I'm not hungry anymore," Aoi said suddenly, packing up his things and standing. He looked at Reita with a frown when he felt him grab his wrist, keeping him rooted to the floor.
"You're never hungry, Aoi-chan," he said softly, his eyes fixed on Aoi's despite the fact that they weren't on Reita anymore. "You're always excerising, you barely do what used to make you happy, and you gave up your favorite foods for shit rabbits munch on--"
"Excuse me for trying to live a healthy lifestyle!" Aoi snapped.
"I'd be more supportive if you weren't doing this for some guy," replied Reita, remaining calm despite the harsh tone that was used against him. "You excerise, but you don't eat anything. That's not exactly what I'd call healthy, Aoi."
"Just forget it, Reita!" Aoi yanked his arm away and stormed out of the lunch room. He wasn't angry because Reita had said that; Hell, he wasn't even angry at him. Aoi was pissed because he was right. He had changed himself without even realizing it. Aoi couldn't see himself whenever he looked into the mirror; he only saw the pale, thin boy that he had forced himself into and it disgusted him. He couldn't even look himself anymore when Reita used to have to pry him away. Even now as he walked into the school's bathroom could he spare a single glance; he had grown to hate himself.
Aoi frowned as he locked himself up in the bathroom, hiding in one of the stalls. Staring down at his jeans, he bit his bottom lip before he rolled him up, revealing a long row of scars and healing cuts. If he was still denying that he had changed, the marks on his legs were proof enough he had. He used to despise the idea of self-mutilation, but now he used it as an escape, as a way to feel when his body became numb. Has he truly become the type of person he hated the most? The scars were signs that pointed to 'yes.'
His body went numb, something it always did when it realized what he was about to do. His hands worked on their own, digging into his backpack and pulling out the blade that had been wrapped up in a blood-stained tissue. He struggled to suppress the faint sob, the hatred he kept locked away bubbling to his surface like usual, always happening whenever he inflicted the pain by writing out his misery in a single stroke on his leg.
Aoi shuddered as he felt the tip of the cool blade against his warm skin, taking a quivering breath before he closed his eyes. Exhaling softly, he applied pressure to the blade and dragged it along his legs, the sharp bite of the razor leaving a burning sensation even after he long pulled it away from the area of skin he decided to mark. The pain he got from the bleeding wound slowly made the tears stop, though it wasn't able to take away the disgust he felt for himself. Aoi softly hiccupped as he wiped his eyes, his other hand still working the sharp blade to inflict deep cuts along those toned legs. He sighed once he felt the blood trickle down his calved and drip onto the floor, staining the blue tile in red.
"Aoi?"
He jumped at the sound of Reita's voice, his body freezing as he stared down at the crimson trail that covered a good amount of his skin and the floor. Finally pulling himself together, he scrambled to his knees and crawled over toward the toilet paper, grabbing some hasitly and pressing it to his leg.
"H-hai?" Aoi managed as he tried to stop the blood from flowing, finding his attempts somewhat unsuccessful. He bit down on his lip ring as he watched Reita draw ever nearer from beneath the stalls, his breath catching in his throat. God, if Reita ever found out about this...
"Are you all right?" He heard him ask from the other side of the locked stall, noting the amount of concern within his voice. Aoi worried his bottom lip between his teeth as he quickly wrapped his leg up in the toilet paper, somewhat satisfied at the makeshift bandage.
"Yeah, I'm fine," he answered as he rolled down his pant leg and grabbed his bookbag. Putting the razor back into the tissue, he stuffed it in his pocket and rose to his feet. Aoi opened the stall and smiled at his friend before he walked out of the bathroom. Reita frowned as he watched him, glancing at the stall once Aoi had left. His eyebrow rose when he saw the tiled floor streaked with red in the corner near the toilet, vaugely wondering it that was Aoi's doing.
He sighed as he headed out of the bathroom when the bell rang, making a mental note to ask Aoi about the blood after their next session ended. Reita smiled at Aoi as he walked into their art class, taking his usual seat at the table where the brunette's bookbag was laying. He sat back as he waited for the class to start, piercing eyes traveling around the room before they inevitably fell upon his raven-haired friend.
Aoi was sharpening a pencil in the back of the room, vaugely aware of what was going on around him. Withdrawing his pencil, he blew away the pencil dust the sharpener had created before he turned around. Aoi gave a faint noise as he stopped, preventing himself from running into Ruki, a sheepish smile give as he stepped out of the way. Bowing apologetically, he rubbed the back of his neck.
"Gomenasai, Ruki-kun," Aoi told him as he watched the small blonde sharpen his pencil. Ruki just shrugged as he kept his attention on the sharpener.
"It's fine," he assured him, sparing him a glance before he returned his gaze to his simple task. "Shiroyama, right?"
"Hai~!" chimed Aoi brightly, his hip pressing against the counter as he crossed his arms and leaned against it. "You can call me Aoi, though; everybody does."
Ruki looked at the taller boy, a wry smile on his lips as he shook his head kindly. "I'd rather not."
"Why?"
"Because," Ruki said simply, his eyes remaining locked on to Aoi's. "I prefer not to call someone anything but their surname until I know them well enough; I expect the same respect in return."
"Oh," said Aoi, looking crestfallen as the smile slowly faded from his lips. He nodded, though, the smile soon returning with a hint of understanding behind it.
"It's nothing on you, Shiroyama-senpai," the younger boy continued. "I just prefer close friends to use nicknames rather than aquaintances."
"No, no~! I understand, Matsumoto-san," Aoi told him, his smile growing a little. "Maybe we could get to know each other well enough to reac that point, ne?"
Ruki hesitated as he pulled out his chair, biting his bottom lip before he turned too look at him. "Anou...no offense, but I have important things to focus on rather than spending time with someone like you."
"Wait," Aoi said, clearly stung by his remark. "What do you mean ‘someone like you’?"
"I'm more focused on my studies rather than socializing, Shiroyama-senpai," he explained, rolling his shoulders in a shrug. "You're probably more worried about what parties are going on this weekend."
"Are you saying I'm not good enough, Matsumoto-san?" Aoi asked, feeling his heartbreak as he watched Ruki show nothing but indifference towards him. "Because that's what it's beginning to sound like."
Again, Ruki shrugged as he turned back to look at Aoi, giving an apologetic frown as he said, "I'm sorry...I don't mean to offend you."
Aoi shook his head before he gave a somber smile. "iie, it's all right.." He bowed is head before he walked back to the table, ignoring Reita's worried and inquiring look as he grabbed his bookbag and hurried out of the classroom. Reita watched him with a frown, reaching over and taking Aoi's sketch pad before slipping it into his own bookbag, deciding that he'd take it to him after school.

"Please be here, Aoi..." Reita murmured underneath his breath as he walked up to the older boy's house, glancing around once he walked through the front gate and knocked on the front door. Rubbing the back of his neck, he smiled as his older sister answered the door, bowing his head politely.
"You must be here for Yuu-kun, ne?" She said brightly, stepping aside once Reita nodded. He walked inside, holding the sketch pad to his chest to his chest as he shifted from one foot to the other.
"So, he's here then?" He asked, giving a sigh of relief when she nodded. "He left this at school and I wanted to return it to him."
"I'll go get him~" She gave Reita another smile before she disappeared up the stairs. He sighed lightly as he played with the book, waiting for Aoi to greet him with the usual smile that he gave whenever Reita showed up at his house unannounced. He frowned to himself as he thought about how he could talk to him, tell him that he's perfect the way he was and he didn't have to change for anyone. He could tell him that he's always liked him...maybe that'll help Aoi see that he was a beautiful person inside and out? Hopefully, whatever he said would be enough to make Aoi realize that he never had to change and possibly go back to how he once was...
His thoughts were cut short when he heard Aoi's older sister scream, though. He immediately dropped the sketch book and his bookbag before he hurried up the stairs two at a time. Confusion didn't have time to set in when he saw her on her knees and staring into Aoi's room in horror. Reita's unasked question was answer as he stopped and stared into his room from the doorway, his heart filling with fear and sheer terror at what his eyes feasted on.
The white walls were stained with red, splattered obscenely like a child's fingerpainting. There were various hand prints along the wall opposite of the door where the most blood had been spilled; the words Am I good enough now? written in the red, makeshift ink. A single trail of blood ran from the W to the floor, showing Aoi's limp, chalk-white body.
"Call an ambulance!" He commanded, not taking his time to look at Aoi's older sister as he hurried over to the boy and scooping him up into his arms to make sure he was still alive. Reita gave a relieved sigh when he stirred lightly, his hand lightly patting his friend's cheek to wake him.
"Aoi..." He began softly, lightly shaking him in an attempt to make him open his eyes. Reita frowned as he groaned, his arms completely limp and covered in red as the blood slowly continued to leak out from his slit veins. "Aoi, open your eyes!"
"Ruki..? Is that you?" The older boy asked softly, his voice hardly above a whisper due to the lack of energy within him. Reita's usually passive exterior began to crumble as his heart broke, tears burning against his eyes as he finally realized what the message on the wall meant...this was all for Ruki.
Swallowing hard, he gave a smile as he nodding faintly, knowing that Aoi's eyesight was incredibly blurred by how the raven-haired boy smiled a weak but happy smile. Who was Reita to deny Aoi something his heart desired so much?
"Yes, Aoi...it's me," he told him, as the tears continued to fall down his cheeks. His body trembled slightly as Aoi reached up and softly caressed his cheek. Reita gently pulled the arm around his waist away and lifted his own hand to take Aoi's into it, giving it a soft squeeze before he laced their fingers together.
"Am I...good enough?" asked Aoi, his voice weaker than it was before. Reita suppressed a faint sob as he nodded and smiled at the other, the tears falling faster at his question.
"You've always been good enough, Aoi-chan," he said softly, pressing a soft kiss to his forehead as he cradled him to his chest, not wanting to let go. "You're absolutely perfect in every way possible."
"I love you, Ruki..."
"I love you, too, Aoi..." he whispered into his ear, leaning his head down to softly kiss his lips. He felt Aoi's lips respond, kissing him back before the grip on his own hand slowly loosened and his body fell limp. His body had bled its life away, leaving Reita alone in his cold room, left with nothing but an empty shell that was once Aoi. "I'll see you soon..."
Kissing his lips one last time, he let the paramedics take Aoi away before he took the blade that Aoi had used to end his life, slipping it into his pocket. He would soon return home and lock himself in the bathroom, fulfilling the promises he made to him. He swore to him he'd protect him in both life and death when they were just entering high school; it was time for him to be by Aoi's side once more...For eternity...
You look at me, the tears begin to fall...
I fail time after time
