To elaborate, Touko's childhood is still vague, and is supposed to be revealed in the visual novel that TYPE-MOON is working on right now, "Mahou Tsukai no Yoru" (Witch of the Holy Night). The story centers on Aoko Aozaki, Touko's younger sister, and while it's still in production, it should be much more informative about Touko too once it comes out. Until then, there are still a few established facts to go on from; what's below are things I've pulled together from Chinese sites.

PAST: The Aozaki is a family of magi. Their bloodline, however, has been thinning, and their magical potential, in decline for several generations now. By the time of Touko's parents, the magical potential of the Aozaki line whs almost completely exhausted. Touko was born then, however, with an astounding number of 20 Magical Circuits in her body, and she was considered as a prodigy by the entire household. Aoko, her younger sister, was born two years later with only one circuit, so being the eldest and possessing more Magical Circuits, Touko was designated as heir. Understanding that the life of a magus is a strict and lonely one full of obstacles, she nevertheless took the responsibility seriously, so she was taken under her grandfather to be trained in the mountains, isolated from the rest of the world while Aoko grew up normally in the care of their parents. At that time, the sisters were on good terms, too. Despite the separation, Aoko and Touko saw each other and talked often; Aoko would tell Touko about her misadventures as a teenage girl, and Touko, as any kind and understanding old sister, would listen to her and encourage her. Even Aoko said herself to be lucky, that big sis was willing to take up the burden of training to become a magus, leaving her to live a free life of her choosing.

This all changed when Touko turned 18. Out of nowhere one day, the grandfather of the family declared Touko to be unfit of becoming the heir, something that she's trained for over a decade to be, and appointed Aoko as the next lead. The younger Aozaki was to then be taken to the temple in the mountains to train with the grandfather, or that was the original plan. Enraged by the sudden betrayal, Touko murdered her own grandfather, but shortly after, she was cursed by both Aoko and Alice Kuonji, Aoko's friend, so that for as long as it is in place, she is banished from her own hometown.

Having already decided to cut her ties with the Aozaki line, Touko then entered the Mages' Association in order to hone her abilities that her family has dismissed and pursue her studies. Rumors say that she really enrolled so that she can try and get back at her sister by attempting to prove herself as the superior magus, but it's not rock set certain. Prior to that, the sixth movie shows that Touko has also studied at Reien Academy (where Azaka currently studies at, a very prestigious private catholic school for girls). It was during that period that she met Araya Souren and Cornelius Alba. She also spent a lot of money during that time and was in heavy debt, but managed to milk cash from the Association by using her sister's name. Either way, in two years' time, she managed to clear everything that she owed. Her circuits' numbers may be average, but the ones that Touko possessed overwhelmed all else through precision. She was also born with a set of mystic eyes, five senses that could feel the intricacies of the world, and knowledge adapting to the natural laws without wasting her own unique aspects. It's with these talents and her own with that she managed to clearly make a name for herself at the association, despite the inheritance disputes.

Ultimately, her hard work did pay off: she received a color designation, which is the highest title of honor that a magus can receive at the Clock Tower. She was, however, titled with "Red" instead of "Blue", the color that she sought after (in her full name 蒼崎橙子, the 蒼 character stands for "Blue" - ironically, 橙 is "Orange", so pairing her name with the title, it's as if her own name degrades that honor). "Blue" went to her sister Aoko, who also pursued her studies in magecraft. It was of course a severe wound to her pride, earning her the nickname of "wounded crimson" - translated to "disgraceful scarlet" in the retail subs of the BlueRay movies boxset, and "dirty red" by the original subbing group that worked with the movie when it was first released. Regardless, that nickname was short-lived, for Touko despised it so much that she solemnly swore to kill anyone who dared call her that, and it was a vow that she strictly upheld. These rankings set aside, Touko's studies on the human body remained outstanding, and her ability to create body parts was so excellent that she received a sealing designation after having been able to reproduce an exact replica of her own body, down to even the Magical Circuits. Following that, she gave up on her research, quit the academy, and fled to Japan to avoid incarceration.

PRESENT: She met Mikiya during the two years when Shiki fell into a coma, following her car accident. He became awestruck at the beauty of one of her dolls on display in a random art exhibit, and with little to no information to go on, he still managed to track Touko down even when she has a barrier raised around her workshop. Acknowledging that his ability to find things is phenomenal, she decided to hire him as her secretary, and eventually met Shiki down the line. Knowing about the properties of the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, she offered to teach Shiki how to use them. Shiki accepted, and it fell on her to go out in combat, whenever fighting becomes involved in one of the paranormal cases that Garan no Dou would be given to handle. Taking up odd jobs and hanging out with Azaka, Shiki, Mikiya, and getting information from her "cop friend", it was a reclusive but nice life that Touko enjoyed, but at the end of the 7th movie, she does also mention that after all these years, it's finally time for her to pack up shop and go somewhere else.

Personality: If you consider yourself a normal person and ever met Touko Aozaki, probably because she first mysteriously approached you and offered to make something for you (no don't refuse her it's not like she's imposing her ideas on you - it'll be a success, seriously!!), then your impression of her would be that of a good-natured, cheery, sharp, witty, and intelligent woman. She's also a heavy smoker, but her high competence and positive attitude would more than make up for any smaller 'failings': her image is that of a relaxed and easygoing person.

That's when Touko has her glasses on. Befitting of the Cool Big Sis trope and a pretty chill boss to work under, she's usually mature, kind, reasonable and very knowledgeable, but she's also more than capable of being whimsical and random. For example, she can sometimes react very strongly to small and silly things like a child would, such as shoving her hands angrily in her coat pockets and pouting fiercely at receiving a parking violation (spoiler: she never went to driving school and Drives Like Crazy), or showing earth-shattering shock at the fact that Mikiya doesn't know what a pop-a-point pencil is (they were popular when she was a student!). This occasionally borderlines on Touko coming off as outright scatterbrained, because some of the things she do can seriously make those close to her wonder just how weird her thought process may be. ...Like the time when she spent ALL her money on a trinket that caught her eye, going so far as to be unable to pay her employee on time, have the audacity to ask him to lend her cash instead, and to top it all off, loudly declare that what she bought was probably useless, but it can gain more worth if she gives it time. ...She's not always like that, of course, but working for her definitely comes with its share of "risks", because she's fairly unpredictable and quite good at throwing everyone off-guard with ridiculous things from time to time. Those close to her should also be careful - she can be a merciless teaser when she's in the mood. Not unlike a cat, though she also very much IS someone whom you want to stay on the good side of.

The reason for that is simple. She gets... unpleasant, when she takes off her glasses. That usually happens for two reasons: she's either discussing about otherworldly things, or things are about to get nasty because someone crossed a line that they shouldn't have. This is because while she supposedly runs a paranormal detective agency named "Garan no Dou" (The Grotto of Monastery) while taking on diverse other jobs, including architect designer, puppet maker, speech therapist, and so on, she remains to be a powerful Magus of great power and fame. She used to study at the Mages' Association, and her goal was to reach the Origin of mankind by researching the workings and evolutions of the human body, which is why she's such an excellent puppet maker. She ran away from the Academy because of her sealing designation, however, which is why she chose to set up shop in Japan and adopt a hermit-like lifestyle. Currently, she is a wanted figure at the Association.

That said, while the ordinary world coexists with the supernatural one, they should also be kept separate from each other because of the clashing differences, though occasionally crossing over is of course inevitable. Because Touko was originally born by the supernatural as a magus, her little business also deals with paranormal death cases, which she's fine with handling for extra cash. The Association's supervision is loose on Japan too, which is a plus, so that lets her do things at her own pace. Due to the fact that she was such a good researcher, she possesses a vast expanse of knowledge, which in turn makes her lectures and explanation that much more important and informative. When talking about these things, she's serious, aloof, to the point, and while she can go on, every word is thought-inducing and meaningful to the situation at hand. There's also a violent and predatory side to her personality: while it manifests as relentless teasing when she's under sunnier dispositions, if one crosses her as a magus, they are not likely to make it out alive. The best example would be in the fifth installment, where she outright kills Cornelius Alba not because he injured Mikiya, not because he helped Araya kidnap Shiki, not because the guy has a huge hateboner against her, but because he made the mistake of calling her "Dirty Red". Having made that rule back at the Academy, she still upholds it rigidly years after she left. Even Araya, the big bad who cooperated with Cornelius, knew this, so while he saved Alba from getting killed by Touko the first time because Alba formally challenged her when she came to the apartment complex and lost, Araya basically allowed Alba to walk right back into death again because the poor sod brought it upon himself by saying the wrong words.

Abilities: As a powerful sorceress, a magus of the Nasuverse, Touko has Magic Circuits in her body that allow her to perform thaumaturgy. 20, to be precise, which is apparently a lot for one of Aozaki descent. As all magi, she's capable of creating Bounded Fields, which are barriers that keep ordinary people away, and mark the area as her workshop. If another magus was to come in uninvited, that's commonly taken as act of hostility and transgression.

For Touko's more personalized abilities, as far as canon material is concerned:

Mystic Eyes: Eyes that allow her to see things that normal people can't see, such as fairies and ghosts. She's born with them.

Rune Magic: She utilizes Norse Runes. Just by drawing them in thin air with a lit cigarette and reciting them, she can cast offensive magic, and in the 4th movie, she mentions that her runes can directly set to burn the heart of a living organism.

Puppet Crafting: She's capable of artificially reproducing parts of the human body that are identical and/or surpass the original. After Shiki lost her arm to fighting Fujino Asagami, Touko made her a new one that's capable of going so far as to grab spirits. In the first movie, Shiki lost that arm again when Fujioh Kyrie possessed the part, forcing Shiki to cut it off in order to break free of her control. Following that, Touko made her a new one again that's even more durable, and commented that it'll be able to withstand being stomped on by an elephant.

Additionally, she received a sealing designation originally because she was able to reproduce a puppet that was an exact replica of her own body - Magic Circuits and everything. Not one that was inferior, not one that was superior, but her complete equal in terms of ability. Going by her own words, however, a puppet is just a container: they are empty if they lack a soul to move them. She seems to have found a way to connect her soul, her consciousness, between her real body and her doll (though which is which has now become impossible to tell - it's not important anyway, and Touko herself dismisses the supposed difference between a clone and an original), which is what allowed her to return to the apartment complex for a second time, after she was "killed" by Araya on her first visit. Araya kept her head alive because he knew that if that was destroyed, it would "activate the switch" to her second body, which is likely synonymous to her consciousness transferring itself to the waiting container when the first body is assuredly "dead" by some means. Cornelius didn't, however, and sealed his own fate when he uttered "dirty red", which is why Araya allowed him to take Touko's head and destroy it, allowing her to come back in her new body later that evening.

Box of Spirits: Her orange suitcase of doom that was only shown in the fifth movie. She takes it with her when she leaves for the apartment complex where Araya and Alba held Shiki captive in order to take her back, and there's two different ones.

► Projection machine: It is said that Touko lost her familiar when she lost to Aoko in one-on-one combat, so this is what she made to replace it. It operates like a projector: it works by shaping an ether clump into a monstrous shadow cat. The cat itself will not be destroyed unless the suitcase is destroyed, and it has the ability to heal Touko if it overlaps on her. It's what she brings to the Apartment complex on her first visit, and how it managed to get Araya's puppet even after Araya supposedly crushed it and destroyed it.

► Sealed Box: She brings it with her on her second visit. It contains an Elritch monstrosity with no discernible form (okay well... just a lot of mouths and thorn-like tentacles) that simply took hold of Alba and ate him whole, and later on, even Araya remarks that this thing inside the box is strong enough to defeat him. Her strongest offensive asset: this box just drags its victim in to devour them, the end.
