I've got a theatre rant...

So.  Broadway Secrets this week had a secret about In the Heights.  It's no secret that In the Heights will always hold a spot in my top five list and will probably spend most of its time warring with Next to Normal for the top spot.  That musical has changed my life in so many ways I can't even begin to explain it.  I've met some of the most ( Read more... )

i love lin-manuel miranda, theatre dorkishness, in the heights is cooler than your mum

There is no such thing as too much Heights. I saw it for the first time last August, and it quickly became one of my most favorite things in the world (as is Next to Normal, for different reasons). I've seen it a dozen times and will be seeing it twice more this month (Chris' last show and Corbin and Janet's last show). I saw that Broadway Secret. I put no stock in these things. Personally, I think it unlikely that the show would close right *before* the holidays. That's usually a big box office boost. Maybe right after the holidays- I could see that. As much as I never want this show to go away- it's so special for so many reasons- the upcoming cast changes will make it easier for me to let it go. I cannot imagine anyone else playing Benny (Chris has not missed a single performance I've been to). I adore Janet (as Carla, as Nina) and will miss her when she goes (again). Corbin was a lovely surprise- and so sweet at the stage door to boot- though I've heard great things about Kyle. Andrea Burns will be back in September, and she rocks completely. So I'm sure I'll see it at least once more after these imminent cast changes. But with so many favorite actors gone/leaving, it will be easier (I hope) to say goodbye.

I'm gonna have the exact opposite problem. I saw Kyle's Usnavi twice on tour, and both times he completely ripped my heart out during Alabanza, as well as being adorkably flail-y during all the big dance numbers. At one point he was doing hopkicks. Freaking hopkicks. He's probably one of my favorite cast members of all time (and I've seen the almost OBC, minus Karen and Carlos). And if the show closes and I have to say goodbye to Beltran!Usnavi... oh goodness, I will cry like a baby.

But you are so, so right. Why would the show close before the holidays? That's basically the dumbest move ever. And I refuse to believe anything until I see an official notice. It's just scary, seeing stuff like that and knowing that somehow, maybe it could be right. :(

Well, you've certainly upped my interest in seeing Kyle! Not that I was opposed before. I'm mostly not happy about Jordin Sparks coming in for Nina, but maybe she'll turn out to be good too. I will see the new actor playing Benny (what is the point of having him start a day before Janet leaves? Wouldn't it make more sense for Chris and Janet to leave at the same time?), but it's going to be so strange. I will be very sad when this show ends, but I'm just trying to enjoy it while I can and will continue to bring others to see it so they can see what the big deal is. Maybe it's best to stay away from that broadway secrets stuff. Like you said, it's not for real until something official is posted.

I'm really iffy on Jordin. A couple of my friends are going to Kyle's first show, and it'll be her first show too. I can't wait to hear all about it. A lot of people are excited about it, but I'm not sold on it. We'll see.
