John Dowd, who investigated Pete Rose for Major League Baseball and represented John McCain during the Keating Five Scandal, among other high-profile clients, has joined the president's legal team, according to two people familiar with the pick.

В биографии Дауда много знаменитых баталий. Одна из них - попытка защиты в 2011 Раджа Раджаратнама, которого обвиняли в мошенничестве путем инсайдерской торговли через хедж-фонд. Прокурором выступал знаменитый Прит Бхарара. На судебном процессе Дауд зарекомендовал себя цепным псом.

Dowd was known for fighting rather than bargaining, and Rajaratnam liked that. In spite of the overwhelming evidence against him and the prospect of a twenty-five-year sentence, he never seemed to consider pleading guilty. Observers attributed this decision to the limited deal he could hope to make with prosecutors, but in fact Rajaratnam could have offered them someone who was, perhaps, even bigger than he was: Rajat Gupta, the former McKinsey head. Instead, the competitor’s code that had brought Rajaratnam to the height of his industry drove him to fight the case. “I’m a warrior,” he once told Chiesi. “They can’t kill me.” <...>
Throughout the trial, John Dowd seemed like a great aging elephant, slow and ponderous but still capable of inflicting damage. <...> After a Wall Street Journal article suggested that the defense had been caught off guard by Brodsky’s cross-examination of one of its witnesses, Dowd shot off an e-mail to the reporter, Chad Bray:
This is the worst piece of whoring journalism I have read in a long time. How long are you going to suck Preet’s teat?
All to hurt a decent, honest witness, Brodsky could not lay a glove on.
It did not work. The jury was not impressed by the worst cross examination ever delivered.
So in the style of Preet, try to smear him by working the sycophants in the back of the Courtroom. He learned from Schumer in the Senate. . . .
Preet is scared shitless he is going to lose this case so he feeds his whores at the WSJ.
What a disgrace for an otherwise great paper.

Но агрессивное поведение адвоката не помогло. Раджаратнам был признан виновным по всем 14 пунктам обвинения и осужден на 11 лет тюрьмы и штраф в $150 миллионов.



Занимательный факт про адвоката Майка Пенса: он близко дружен с Коми и был крестным отцом его дочери. На фоне других членов кабинета Трампа Пенс - нищеброд, все его состояние около $200 тысяч. Этого недостаточно для оплаты дорогого адвоката. Приходится крутиться, собирая деньги иным образом.

Pence, who unlike his boss is not independently wealthy, could possibly use funds from the Trump-Pence re-election campaign or from Pence's new PAC, which is hosting a fundraiser Friday, to pay Richard Cullen, the chairman of McGuireWoods LLP.
Pence told reporters in Miami Friday that hiring an outside lawyer was standard practice.
"It's very routine," Pence said. "Very routine."
