And frankly, Putin is backing a person that's truly an evil person. And I think it's very bad for Russia. I think it's very bad for mankind. It's very bad for this world. <...> This is an animal. And I really think that there's going to be a lot of pressure on Russia to make sure that peace happens, because, frankly, if Russia didn't go in and back this animal, you wouldn't have a problem right now. He was going to be overthrown. I thought he was gone. He had another week. I mean he was finished. He had nothing, nothing. And then Russia came in and saved him.
Vanity Fair: Can Trump bomb his way out of the Russian mess?
“If there was anything that Syria did, it was to validate the fact that there is no Russia tie,” Eric Trump, the president’s son, told The Daily Telegraph. Spicer made a similar point during his press briefing Tuesday. “It’s interesting that we went from all of these direct links to Russia to now are we disappointed that we can’t even get a meeting with him,” the press secretary said, referring to Tillerson having been refused a meeting with Putin during his visit to Moscow. “There is a bit of irony in the question.”
Eric Trump, for all his lack of subtlety, is not wrong that his father’s Syria adventure has taken the spotlight off Russia. This week, CNN reported that classified documents contradict House Intelligence Committee chairman Devin Nunes’s suggestion that the Obama administration may have illegally spied on the Trump campaign. The Washington Post confirmed that Carter Page was a top F.B.I. counterintelligence target. And the Associated Press revealed that former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort did indeed receive at least $1.2 million in off-the-books payments from a pro-Russian political party in Ukraine. Now the White House can point to each of those stories and say, So what? If we really had colluded with Russia, would we be antagonizing them in Syria?
Поспешил ли Спайсер со своим заявлением, что Россия является союзником США ("creating areas in which we can work with allies, including Russia")?
