Законопроект о создании такой комиссии лежит в Конгрессе. Его поддержали все демократические конгрессмены и один чудаковатый республиканец. Для принятия закона было бы достаточно поддержки спикера, Пола Райана. На прошлой неделе это было невозможно: Райан пытался во всем идти навстречу Трампу, чтобы заручиться его поддержкой по закону о медицинской реформе (Ryancare/Trumpcare). Теперь шансы увеличились, но остаются малыми. К тому же Трамп и Бэннон могут попытаться избавиться от Райана и поставить на место спикера более лояльного человека.
От спикера также зависит, оставить ли на своём месте председателя комиссии по разведке, Девина Нунеса, после его странного поведения на прошлой неделе, которое серьёзно подорвало доверие к независимости расследования.

Надо сказать, что у Нунеса, агронома по образованию, нет должной квалификации для руководства комиссией по разведке или для проведения расследования: "After receiving his associate of arts degree from the College of the Sequoias, Nunes graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a bachelor's degree in agricultural business and a master's degree in agriculture." У других республиканцев в комиссии опыт побольше. К примеру, Will Hurd из Техаса - ветеран ЦРУ, а Trey Gowdy из Южной Каролины (печально известный по расследованию Бенгази) - бывший прокурор. Неопытность Нунеса до сих пор была плюсом для демократов в комиссии. Видимо поэтому от них пока не слышно явных призывов к его отставке.
Адам Шифф, демократический заместитель Нунеса, пользуется прикованным к нему вниманием для приобретения политической популярности. В его недавнем выступлении "The role of Congress in protecting liberal democracy" слышатся нотки будущего президента или на худой конец сенатора.

Now that we know the enemy within our midst, it is up to us to rise to the challenge.

I'm going to simply say what I said at the outset. Weeks ago, when I was first getting started with this, I said, "This is the most important thing I've ever worked on." With what I know now, I doubly believe that. This is the most serious effort. It has to be done bipartisan. We have to get the facts out to the American people--

В системе Министерства юстиции (DOJ) за ФБР непосредственно надзирает заместитель генерального прокурора. Кандидат на эту должность, Rod Rosenstein, прошёл слушания в юридической комиссии Сената, но, прежде чем ставить его кандидатуру на голосование, руководство комиссии запросило у генпрокурора дополнительные документы о прослушке Флинна. Они получили закрытый брифинг директора ФБР, который, судя по всему, произвёл сильное впечатление, и согласились вернуться к рассмотрению вопроса в комиссии в понедельник.
Grassley and the committee’s top Democrat, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, were briefed by FBI Director James Comey last week. A Grassley spokeswoman also said the administration has either provided - or agreed to hand over - key documents related to the Russia probe to the committee. The vote on Rosenstein’s nomination in the committee will likely be pushed to the following week. Some Democrats have vowed to use all tactics to slow down Rosenstein’s confirmation unless he promised to appoint a special prosecutor to oversee the federal investigation into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 campaign and potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow.
