This story is about a virus, a virus created five decades ago by a government with the intention to slowly and methodically poison its enemies but this is no biological virus it's more of a political one and chances are you have already been infected."

During the campaign, the KGB, assisted by the USSR’s Novosti Press Agency and the allied intelligence services of the Soviet bloc, sought to spread the thesis internationally that the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) was genetically engineered or otherwise concocted by the Pentagon as part of its alleged research in biological weapons at the U.S. Army’s Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) at Fort Detrick, Maryland.

Кампания против вируса началась в скромной газете «Патриот», выходившей в Нью-Дели. Газета издавалась при содействии КГБ и служила рупором советского коммунизма в Индии. В 1983 году в «Патриоте» вышла статья, в которой утверждалось, что вирус иммунодефицита человека искусственно создан в США, в лаборатории Форт Детрик в Мэриленде. Автор статьи ссылался на неназванного американского учёного, письмо которого якобы получил главный редактор «Патриота». Форт Детрик - небольшая военная база, где в 50-60-х годах действительно разрабатывалось биологическое оружие, однако эти эксперименты были запрещены президентом Никсоном в 1969 году, то есть за 14 лет до «разоблачения» в индийской газете.
Детонатором антиамериканской кампании в СМИ (и образцом искусства пропаганды) стал материал, который вышел в «Литературной газете» в 1985 году. Он назывался «Паника на Западе, или что скрывается за сенсацией вокруг AIDS». Автор - журналист Валентин Запевалов - с первых же слов брал драматическую ноту: «Вот уже который месяц на Западе царит возбуждение в связи с таинственной болезнью, всё больше принимающей размах эпидемии. С титульных листов газет и журналов кричат раздирающие душу аршинные заголовки, в которых неизменно присутствует слово AIDS». Запевалов приводил статистику заболеваемости и после этого элегантно задавал вопрос в пустоту - почему же все болезни «неизменно появляются в США»? Далее читателю предлагалась подборка фактов из истории разработки биологического оружия, и наконец Запевалов цитировал «выходящую в Индии солидную газету „Патриот“», которая «прямо высказала предположение, что AIDS - следствие бесчеловечных экспериментов Вашингтона». В конце статьи Запевалов выражал надежду, что «кто-то из жертв возбудит дело против Пентагона и ЦРУ, и тогда окончательно вскроется, что все жертвы AIDS - результат очередного чудовищного эксперимента».
Сложно сказать, каким тиражом выходила «Литературная газета» в те годы, но вслед за ней тему подхватили другие: материалы в подобной стилистике в течение двух лет регулярно появлялись практически во всех советских газетах и журналах. Американский историк Том Богхардт в 2009 году выпустил подробное исследование о том, как в СССР проводились aktivinyye meropriatia, основной целью которых была dezinformatsiya граждан. «Советская пропаганда, - говорит Богхардт, - создала монстра, который пережил её саму».
Карьера Валентина Запевалова, с которого началась эта история, между тем пошла в гору и вроде бы сложилась достаточно неплохо. В 2001 году он обнаружился в Росвооружении в должности пресс-секретаря, затем его следы встречаются в центральном аппарате партии «Единая Россия», и наконец в 2013 году, судя по его фейсбуку, он начал работать в РЖД.

Распространившись по миру через подконтрольные СМИ, теория заговора стала жить своей жизни и была более разрушительной, чем запущенная КГБ теория заговора про убийство Кеннеди, поскольку принесла человеческие жертвы. Распространившись в разных странах и вызывая недоверие к США, она обрекла тысячи людей на смерть из-за отказа принять американскую помощь в лечении СПИДа.

When AIDS emerged in the early 1980s, Soviet bloc disinformation specialists quickly recognized the opportunity the mysterious epidemic offered, acted with alacrity, and planted disinformation only months after the scientific community had coined the term “AIDS” and established the existence of a causative virus. Equipped with an intuitive understanding of the human psyche, Soviet and East German disinformation specialists applied the techniques that stimulate the growth and spread of rumors and conspiracy theories-simplistic scapegoating, endless repetition, and the clever mixing of lies and half-truths with undeniable facts. Once the AIDS conspiracy theory was lodged in the global subconscience, it became a pandemic in its own right. Like any good story, it traveled mostly by word of mouth, especially within the most affected sub-groups. Having effectively harnessed the dynamics of rumors and conspiracy theories, Soviet bloc intelligence had created a monster that has outlived its creators.

У нынешних наследников КГБ навыки "активных мероприятий" не пропали. Доклад ЕС указывает на активную кампанию дезинформации о коронавирусе COVID-19 со стороны путинских спецслужб.

“A significant disinformation campaign by Russian state media and pro-Kremlin outlets regarding COVID-19 is ongoing,” according to an internal EU document dated March 16 and seen by Bloomberg News. “The campaign is designed to exacerbate confusion, panic and fear, and to prevent people from accessing reliable information about the virus and public-safety provisions.”
The EU analysis found that disinformation was spread in multiple languages including English, Italian, Spanish, Arabic and Russian. It also said the East StratCom Task Force -- a multi-agency EU team focusing on such campaigns of deception -- had identified 80 cases related to coronavirus since January 22.
The pro-Russia campaign has sought to “advance a narrative that coronavirus is a human creation, weaponized by the West,” according to the memo. “Messages targeting Italy aim to exacerbate fears over the ability of national and international authorities to manage the outbreak.”
Meanwhile, messages in Spanish “advance apocalyptic stories, blame capitalists for trying to benefit from the virus, and emphasize how well Russia and Putin are dealing with the outbreak.”
Russia’s state-sponsored coverage of the virus has been popular on social media. For example, coverage by the Kremlin-backed RT Spanish was shared on Facebook, Twitter and Reddit 6.8 million times, the EU found.
The EU’s analysis was carried out in partnership with researchers at Cardiff University’s Crime and Security Institute, according to the memo. The researchers found that, instead of developing original content, Russia is amplifying theories originating in China and Iran as well as among the American far right. Other researchers cited in the memo found disinformation narratives that included the theory that migrants were responsible for spreading the virus.
The EU analysis said that disinformation campaigns create “real-life consequences.” As an example, it cited a fake letter that purported to be from Ukraine’s Health Ministry, falsely saying there were five cases of the disease in the country. The letter was authored outside of Ukraine, according to that country’s security services, but managed to incite riots.
Russia’s disinformation campaign around coronavirus aligns with its “broader strategy of attempting to subvert societies from within by exploiting their vulnerabilities and divisions,” the memo said.

A top State Department official said Thursday that Russia is behind “swarms of online, false personas” that sought to spread misinformation about coronavirus on social media sites, stressing the “entire ecosystem of Russian disinformation is at play.”
The latest warning came from Lea Gabrielle, the coordinator of the government’s Global Engagement Center, in testimony to Congress. Her remarks follow days after an unpublished agency report, unearthed by The Washington Post on Saturday, revealed nearly 2 million tweets over a three-week period pushed coronavirus-related conspiracy theories abroad.
Gabrielle did not link that report with her broader conclusions about Russian interference online. But she said actors tied to the country - through “state proxy websites,” official state-owned media and fake accounts online - were part of an effort to “take advantage of a health crisis, where people are terrified worldwide, to try to advance their priorities.”

Эпидемия СПИДа (ВИЧ) в России продолжается, и в настоящее время задевает более миллиона человек.

Число инфицированных ВИЧ в России, по последним данным, составляет 1,06 млн человек, сообщил "Интерфаксу" глава Федерального научно-методического центра по профилактике и борьбе с ВИЧ-инфекцией, академик РАН Вадим Покровский, ссылаясь на данные Роспотребнадзора.
Показатель за шесть месяцев текущего года вырос на 47 тыс. человек.
Общее число инфицированных, отметил Покровский, растет, параллельно растет смертность: так в прошлом году 37 тыс. умерло от СПИДа. Это рекордная цифра.
По статистике, самое большое количество инфицированных в России среди мужчин в возрасте 30-40 лет (в этой группе до 4% инфицированы ВИЧ). У женщин наибольший процент в группе 30-35 лет (2-3%). Основным путем заражения является секс между мужчиной и женщиной.
