The SVR was in it for the long haul. The illegals were content to wait decades to obtain their objective, which was to develop sources of information in U.S. policymaking circles.
Although they didn’t achieve that objective, the agent said, “without us there to stop them, given enough time they would have eventually become successful.”
After years of gathering intelligence and making sure we knew who all the players were, we arrested the illegals on June 27, 2010. Weeks later, they pled guilty in federal court to conspiring to serve as unlawful agents of the Russian Federation within the U.S.
The plea represented the culmination of a remarkable effort on the part of countless Bureau personnel, including agents, analysts, surveillance teams, linguists, and others.
“Operation Ghost Stories sends a message to foreign intelligence services that espionage threats to the U.S. will not be tolerated,” our agent said. “The FBI’s counterintelligence mission is to identify, disrupt, and defeat the activities of foreign espionage agents, and we take that job very seriously.”

Благодаря успешной работе над этой и другими подобными операциями Строк заслужил повышение по службе и стал руководителем отдела контрразведки в Вашингтоне.
Вчерашние показания в Конгрессе, как и ожидались, затянулись на весь день (9 часов) и превратились в клоунаду. Если что и удивило, это то, насколько спокойно и уверенно держался Строк под обстрелом - можно было подумать, что он занимается таким каждый день.

Пока что этот маневр удалось отвести в сторону. Демократы в комиссии немедленно напомнили, что Стив Бэннон - уже не сотрудник администрации, а частный гражданин, тупо отказывался отвечать на вопросы того же Гауди, когда давал показания в Конгрессе за закрытыми дверями. Они потребовали вызвать Бэннона для дачи открытых показаний.

Under House Rule XI clause 2(j)(1), Minority Members have the right to demand a day of hearings to allow witnesses to testify on the subject of a current hearing. During today’s hearing, Republicans from both committees opposed Rep. Eric Swalwell’s motion to subpoena Steve Bannon for testimony related to his involvement with law enforcement actions before, during, and after the 2016 election.

Если атака на Строка и Пейдж пока буксует, успеха достигла атака на другом фронте. Под нажимом Белого дома и в нарушении правил и прецедентов (а также возражений руководства разведки) Министерству юстиции и ФБР пришлось предоставить Конгрессу данные об источнике ФБР - профессоре Халпере и его роли в расследовании Рашагейта.
The White House has rebuffed concerns among American intelligence and law enforcement officials and ordered that more lawmakers be given access to classified information about an informant the F.B.I. used in 2016 to investigate possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia, according to two American officials with knowledge of the decision.
Both the director of national intelligence and the director of the F.B.I. tried to keep the classified documents tightly restricted, fearing that a broader dissemination of operational reports and other sensitive material could lead to more leaks of detailed information about the role of the confidential F.B.I. informant.
Some American officials believe, in fact, the reason the White House made the decision was to provide political ammunition to President Trump’s Republican allies who have argued - without any evidence - that the F.B.I. investigation was opened in July 2016 as an effort to keep Mr. Trump from becoming president.

Более разрушительным для расследования может оказаться еще один ход - несмотря на возражения демократов, через Сенат продавили назначение Brian Benczkowski на пост главы криминального отдела Минюста. Квалификации для этой работы у него нет, но есть тесная смычка с Сешнсом и Альфа-банком.
Бензковски может не дотянуться до Мюллера, но у него будет возможность вмешиваться, например, в криминальное расследование Майкла Коэна в Нью-Йорке. А в случае увольнения Розенштайна или Сешнса его можно будет поставить на их место и объявить шах и мат.
