[X] 100 Fubaru Themes (015)

Dec 25, 2005 02:37

This segment is mostly filler, but Subaru's desires segue into the next segment (016) to be written. This is one of the ones you could probably skip if you wanted to. It's certainly not one of my favorites, and I had only the vaguest of ideas what I wanted to do with it when I started writing...

(Kind of like this entire project, haha!)

X/1999 // Fuuma/Subaru

100 Fubaru Themes:
015: Young leaves mark

"I told you...that there was nothing I wished to do for you," Subaru explained during a brief argument with Fuuma. "I don't want to fight or break down barriers, and you told me before that it was all right."

"Then why are you here," Fuuma had asked in response, tightening his grip on Subaru's shoulder, "always...acting like you're part of something, that you'll do something for us? How serious are you? What do you come here for, again and again yet never doing anything?"

Looking in the mirror before preparing for a shower, Subaru sighed, recalling their argument earlier in the day. It was true he stopped by the metropolitan building's basement fairly often yet never really did anything except socialize, which, in retrospect and consideration to his previous experience with the Seals, was unusual for him. But he could hardly consider himself dead weight among the Angels - if anyone were to be given that distinction, it would be that big, strong fellow, he was sure.

"You really don't have to do anything," Fuuma reiterated, "so why are you here?"

At the time, Subaru didn't really have a clear answer he could coherently give to Fuuma, but outside the mental haze of confrontation, he knew why: it was an excuse to see Fuuma, and when he wasn't with Fuuma, it was healthy exercise to socialize with the charming and easy playboy or the standoffish yet similar computer genius; he usually managed to avoid Kanoe, though, because she intimidated him and often gave him menial errands to do.

"Do you want me to leave?"

Fuuma's grip on his shoulder was painful at that point. "No, I want you to make yourself useful."

Useful. Fuuma had insinuated about his uselessness before, and Subaru certainly didn't want to become a throwaway object under any circumstances. No...that had been awful once before. But with his refusal to fight his former allies, he could see what Fuuma meant, though if he could aid the Angels, their Kamui in fact, in another manner...

Gazing at his own reflection and his mismatched eyes, Subaru removed his shirt and fingered at the dark spots on his shoulders.
