"What The Doctor Ordered" (Final Sequel to "Comfort Food") Part 4 Gen, PG

“So we’re back to a stalking basis.” Nora sighs when she caught sight of Dean in the hallway.

“Sorry.” Dean said quietly.

Nora turned to face Dean, arms folded across her doctor’s coat. A tense moment passed between them.

“I know you have to get back to work… but just here me out.” She looked mildly annoyed, but nodded curtly for him to go on. “I’m sorry… for running out like that. I just wanted to make sure you knew it wasn’t anything you did. It’s me. I’m not myself lately… and believe me if I was, I would never have done that to you. You’re great. You didn’t deserve that and… I just wanted you to know I was sorry.” Her expression hadn’t changed so Dean looked away, abashed. “I’ll let you get back to work.”

“How?”

Dean stopped from turning away, looking back at her confused.

“I mean, you come all the way to my job, to tell me you’re sorry, ‘it’s not you it’s me”, the least you can do is tell me how it was you.”

Dean fidgeted, looking at the floor. “It’s complicated.”

“Well that’s original.” She said sarcastically.

“Nora I don’t think you’ll understand…”

“You want to know what I don’t understand?” She asks bitterly, “Everything was fine, and then you just up and left like that. No explanation, no sign, no warning, you just ran out. And I know this isn’t serious, but I’d still like to know what the hell happened. So if you could man-up and explain now, I’d appreciate it.”

Dean looked at Nora for a long moment. “I thought you deserved better.”

Her angry face dissolved into confusion. “What?”

“I didn’t think I was good enough for you.” Dean confessed.

“Don’t you think I should be the judge of what I think it good enough for me?”

“You should… but I can’t stop thinking it.”

“Boy… you’re crazy.”

He shrugs and laughs a little, embarrassed. “I told you it was complicated.” He moves to leave again.

“Hey, you’re not gonna get off the hook that easy.” Nora moves toward him, determined. “I said you’re crazy, but I didn’t say I wasn’t interested. Listen, I’m going to level with you. I like you and, if you can’t handle that, fine. But I don’t know why you’re letting this…this complex you got going on ruin everything. I know what I want, and it’s you. Can’t you just be happy with what’s right in front of you?”

It takes a lot, but he manages a nod. “I can try.”

She’s only an inch from him, and he has to try hard not to stand tall and not recoil as she nears closer to him belly. “And you won’t vanish again? You’ll really try?” She’s asking it all with those big, hopeful eyes and Dean just can’t resist going in for a kiss.

`           “I promise.” He says as he pulls away.

“Good.” She playfully grabbed his hand and pulled him down the hall, and he allows her to drag him into a empty exam room.

“Don’t you have work to be doing?”

“Dude, that’s what nurses are for.” She smirks and locks the door behind her, crossing the room and grabbing Dean’s jacket, pulling him in for a strong, passionate kiss. He grabs her and lifts her onto the bench, and they’re at it, but this time Dean is unyielding and boldly following her lead.

She’s worked her coat and shirt off, and soon busies herself with pushing his overcoat off. Dean let’s her, but when it gets time to pull his t-shirt off, he notices just how bright the room is and finds himself pulling away again.

“Dean…” She breathes, “what is it?” Then she notices how he’s looking away again and follows his stare to the reflection in the glass cabinet. She sees his expression of sadness, the way he’s scrutinizing himself and suddenly she seems to understand.

Leaning out she grabs hold of his hefty sides, leading him back. Nora catches his gaze and returns his eyes back to her. “Let me.” She soothes, as she works her fingers beneath the hem. Dean offers her a small, uneasy smile, but willingly lifts his arms and she removes the shirt.

Dean feels so revealed and exposed, that he can’t help but place his arms across himself. Not that it covers much over his expansive midsection. She smiles though.

“You’re adorable.” She tell him as grabs his arms, pulling them around her, and back into an embrace. Dean follows, cringing a bit when his bare stomach presses into hers, but she lovingly strokes it, pressing herself closer to his warmth as they kiss, and the worry begins to melt away.

He shifts into high gear, pushing her back and hiking her skirt up and she grins devilishly. “Now this is what I’m talking about.”

Sam glanced from the passenger seat of the Impala at his brother and Nora, once again glued together in a make-out session. Ever since Sam dosed Dean with some tough love, everything turned around. Dean went back to apologize to Nora and they’d been inseparable. Some nights he didn’t even come home, not that Sam was complaining.

He was amazed at the transformation. Dean stopped with the constant layers and instead comfortably walked around in t-shirts. Sam even caught him shirtless while working on the car one day (after which Dean got sunburnt and bitched about, much to Sam’s amusement). He ate like he always had. The voracious binging was subdued to what his normal appetite always was. When they revisited the hospital for Dean’s check-up exam they found that the old scale had indeed been wrong, and he had actually lost a couple pounds. In addition his blood pressure was lower and his heart seemed to be in perfect condition. The snarky remarks returned as well as the ‘devil-may-care’ attitude. While it was annoying at times, Sam was just relived to see Dean was genuinely happy and acting like his old self, even if it did mean Sam had to deal with his new-found ego that was as big as he was.

And though Sam offered to stay a little longer, Dean insisted it was time they moved on. So they packed their meager belongings and drove out that morning to say goodbye to Nora.

Dean eased down into the driver’s seat and started the engine. Nora came over and leaned into the passenger window.

“If you ever come through again, don’t be strangers, ok?”

Sam nodded while Dean promised he wouldn’t. Nora smiled, wished them a safe trip, and gave them a final wave as Dean finally drove off.

About a mile down the road Sam started chuckling under his breath. Dean looked at him quizzically.

“What?”

Sam looked out the window, still grinning. “Nothing.”

“Dude, what?”

“It’s just… all this time, all the stress, and the fighting and… turns out all we had to do was get you laid.”

Dean glared at Sam, but his laughter was contagious, and Dean couldn’t stop a smile from crossing his face. “Screw you.”

“Whatever man. I’m just glad you’re back.”

“Well if you’re so glad, then you won’t mind me doing this.” Dean reached forward and popped a cassette in, and turned the volume up so loud Sam could feel his eardrums vibrating.

“You’re a fucking jerk!” Sam shouted over the classic rock, but he was answered by Dean singing loudly along. He sank back in the seat and sighed. Whatever state he was in, Dean was always going to be a pain in the ass. But watching Dean drumming on the steering wheel, carefree look on his face, Sam knew he’d take this version any day. Extra hundred pounds and all.

Looks like these last two weeks were just what the doctor ordered.

THE END.
