My Gay Ass Speech

May 06, 2005 19:25

Mkay, so in speech class we had to write a persuasive speech, trying to get kids on our side of controversial issues... Obviously I did Same-sex marriage. Fen was absolutely NO help as I attempted to write this last night! She kept askin if I was done yet... how far I had to go... lol, I got NOTHING done while talking to her! *Wishes I were a multi-tasker*...

Think back on our last election, in 2004. Many of your parents went out to cast their votes and some of you may have as well. I went with my mother to vote last November and I don't even remember which guy we voted into office. I couldn't care less. I had one goal and one goal only. I wanted to cast my vote (or rather my mothers) for Proposal 2. To some of you this means nothing, but to me it was landmark. The majority of Michigan voted 'Yes' while I voted 'No'. Can you even remember what Proposal 2 said? None the less remember if it passed or not? I can remember, I do know that the bill passed into the State of Michigans Constitusion last November. I also know that bill took some vary basic things away from certain minorities.

You all have heard same-sex marriage arguments before. Opposers will use some very common defenses to attempt to make same-sex marriages seem wrong. And un-lawful. One major point Anti-Gay Marriage activists will use is; that Gay marriage will ruin society. They say same-sex marriages aren't legitimate because they don't produce children. If this is fact then... I'm assuming this goes for all marriages that don't produce offspring. Obviously elderly men and women shouldn't be able to re-marry legitamately, after menopause they can kiss producing a new generation goodbye. And what about barren couples? Infertile men and women don't deserve to marry. They obviously don't derseve that privledge for they can't give the world more mouths to feed. I completely understand this point. Don't you?

Yet another argument staged by opposers to same sex marriage is that; The commitment of husband and wife to love and serve one another promotes the welfare of children and the stability of society. They're right really. Marriage between a husband and wife does promote stability. But it's not the only thing that teaches ethics and stability in our world. Hard working, single mothers teach their children the value of everything they have everyday. Uncles take in nieces and nephews everyday when, by happinstance their parents were killed in a car accident... So many people take care of children, join the PTA, help in their communities who don't have a opposite-gendered spouse to help them along that to say only married couples promote American values. Why would a household with two parents of the same gender be any different? A women who lives with her sister cannot take as good care of her children because she does not have a man with her? Is that the America we are trying to promote and encourage? A uniform one with no change and no drive for diversity? I sure didn't think so...

Probably the most major of points made by the opposition seems to be one of the funniest. For me at least... Somewhere it says: The Union of a man and a woman is the most enduring of human institutions, honoring and honored in all cultures and by every religious faith. The first thing I thought upon hearing this was 'What a joke'. If a union between a man and a woman is so sacred and enduring... why don't they say Brittney Spears ruined marriage instead of homosexuals? If her 55 hour long marriage, done on a drucken spree in Las Vegas was enduring then... whew! We are so on our way to protecting marriage. Maybe we should just make laws prohibiting celebrity marriage as well. They don't have lives and hearts after all...

My first two reasons for supporting same-sex marriages are, I believe, common sense. First and formost... If two people wish to build a life together, own a home, get benefits, find a dog to love... why stop them? Why not let them have a legitamate relationship in the eyes of the state? Why stop to people who are in love from getting what the majority of the country gets everyday? Even people who have whims like Brittney Spears can get married at the drop of a dime then get divorced all in one weekend. Why can't two men or two women, who are planning to spend the rest of their lives together, have this same opportunity? Who are they hurting? Who besides a few others's faith?

Another common sense reason same-sex marriage is not only ok but BENIFICAIL is that they cannot have children. Yes, some believe they shouldn't get married because they can't produce children... that they won't help the world in any amazing way. What about the millions of children who lay their heads down at night parentless. Orphans throughout the world are just waiting to be adopted... but, I guess some people don't care about lives after they're brought into this world. Maybe they only care that they are in it to preserve the species. If a same-sex couple wants a child they will be forced to adopt. How can that possibly be a problem? How can giving a home to a lost child be a bad thing? Don't try to find an answer because it's right in front of you. It CAN'T be a bad thing.

Lastly I'd like to tell you about equal rights. Some have them here in America and some don't. Minorities populate the country just like your average white American working man. African Americans are a minority... they have been slowly given all the advantages of the majority throughout the years.... Native Americans are a minority... most of them now make more than an average middle class citizen does everyday... Why do we here in America pick and choose who we are going to hand out equal rights to.I never thought that was the point of Freedom. I always thought whatever floats your boat is the way to be. Gay marriage doesn't hurt anyone in a phsyical way. It harms no one besides little voices in our head that say it's wrong. I can't see why that of all things keeps this particular minority away from what is rightfully theirs.

The ability to marry? More than 90% of all Americans enjoy this right each and every day. We can marry when we want, where we want, and how we want. Don't you think it's sad not everyone can marry who they want? I do.

Ta-Da!!!! Wasn't it beautimous?
