Question for my published friends

If this is in your contract for an advance:

The $5,000 payment is an advance against the royalties to be earned by the author under the [major publisher] publishing agreement.  [Major publisher] will determine the royalty rates to be paid under the publishing agreement; such rates will depend on the format in which the book will be published.

Does that mean if they pay me $5000, and the royalties only come to $2000 because of their poor distribution or cliquishness, I would owe them $3000?

writing, money, book
