Of golden brow and the djin in my room

Sep 06, 2010 18:02

A few months ago I caught up with some students after lectures and they were saying something which sounded like "Golden brow, so funny." So I said "What's funny? What golden brow?" to the mirth of my so-called friends; they were talking about Gordon Brown's microphone accident. So I vowed to myself I'd read the news and keep up with politics more.

I installed a BBC app on my phone, watch CNN, read the Guardian, and have Al-Jazeera on facebook. I now pay the world as much attention as I do fandoms. Nice, right? Except that now there's a lot more natural disasters, children-mauling animals, suicide bombers, and chicken massacres in my life. If only I had kept my mouth shut that day.

My only sources of joy today are The Sims, JE fandoms (one of which just said goodbye to a certain member), One Piece (which is on a month-long break), The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (also on a break), and cute babies in clinics (who I have to send home screaming after I give them their immunisations). To top it all off, my housemates are away and there was a bleeding djin in my room, singing strange songs and rummaging around and flicking away my bedroom light. I'll let you know, I was very brave that night sobbing away underneath my covers telling it/them to cut it out and leave me alone :D

On the plus side of all this paying-more-attention-to-the-world stuff, I'm now a better informed person. About djins as well as about world issues. I've rediscovered my conscience and I've also learned to keep my mouth shut in topics I don't know about (cue Golden Brow giggles). The downside is in addition to me becoming a cynic, I am also a lot more annoying; I spent my summer vacation pestering my dad to financially adopt war orphans, arguing with my parents about rights and policies, and trying to get my mum to accept the possibility of me adopting a child before I even marry. Tears were shed, agreements and disagreements both reached, emails were exchanged (We're proud to have a daughter with your stands and beliefs), and of course, after that email, tears were shed again.

I love my mummy and daddy ♥

This is a weird post, but it sorta explains part of the reason why I haven't had much time to post and comment lately?

Quick fandom update in case I sound too beads-wearing organic-eating humanitarian (not that there is anything wrong with them):

I'm loving Tokio's new single and Toma PV debut. I wish Hotaru no Hiraki 2 and Unubore Deka get subbed faster (THEY'RE SO FUNNY YOU GUYS). I don't think Yonekura Ryoko's schoolgirl-like crush on Aiba will ever go away which is fine because it's just way too adorable. And KAT-TUN fandom, why are you so awesome? It's like now that Jin's no longer in the picture, every male Kame-fan feels safe to come out of the closet and gush about him in public. They have my seal of approval:

:D
