"We believe democracy alone can save Pakistan from disintegration and a militant takeover. We are prepared to risk our lives and we are prepared to risk our liberty, but we are not prepared to surrender our great nation to the militants." (Former Pakistani Prime Minister Bhutto)
I was reading that in a news article, and was thinking "right on!", but then the part about "risk our liberty" jumped out at me. It almost is the same mentality here in the US, we want BIG government i.e. democracy, and will sacrifice freedom and liberty to have it. It is completely opposite of how this country began. Our forefathers, and ancestors lived in terribly turbulent times in the pursuit of NOT the American Dream but of freedom and liberty. It was a very bloody time. Now we want (speaking generally here) the government to tell us how to live, how much money to make, etc, so we can be complacent and be comfortable.
To hell with that. I'd much rather live with the blinders off, and go through trials and tribulations than give up liberty in the name of democracy. People always say "Freedom isn't free", sure. But I say Liberty isn't cheap to give away.
