A woman on the shuttle this morning overheard me discussing my plans to visit Chicago this weekend, and told me she was going there as well. Here is the conversation that followed:
Her: Where are you visiting in Chicago?
Me: Lombard.
H: Ah, yes, I've been there.
M: And yourself?
H: My family is in Lake Forest.
M: That's a nice area.
H: My family moved there when I was in college. I grew up on the South Side.
M: Really? Whereat?
H: Hyde Park.
M: A friend of mine grew up in Dolton.
H: I've never heard of it.
And all I can think is, this woman is definitely from money. Everybody knows that Hyde Park is not really part of the South Side, and I can't believe she's never heard of Dolton. Doesn't she watch the news?!? I don't even like her now, just based on this tiny conversation. How's that for passing judgement?
