What goes with brown?

Jan 10, 2006 11:26

Over Christmas, I bought a pair of very dark brown pants. I have one sweater that is cream and brown, but I am now realizing I have no idea what other colors to wear with brown. Am I stuck with wearing brown with brown? Is red acceptable with brown? Ack!

This probably doesn't help much... starkraving_mad January 10 2006, 17:38:00 UTC
But it pretty much comes down to, put it on together and see if it looks good. If you put it on and think, I'm not so sure about this, don't wear it. As for the brown with brown, outfits made of multiple shades of the sam color can sometimes be stunning. The key to those is that the shades have a decent range, as opposed to shades only slightly off from each other. (ie dark brown pants, brown shoes, tan shirt, light brown jacket)

I have learned over the years that color combinations which I enjoy mightily are not considered appropriate for a professional environment. So the "I'm not so sure about it" test is pretty much useless for me. :( But thanks!

So maybe the thing to do is get a friend whose fashion sense you trust and have them come over to look at the pants with some of your shirts. You wouldn't necessarily have to try them on since you already know the pants and shirts both fit; you're just trying to look at the colors together.

"Hey, Martha? Wanna come over and help me color-coordinate my pants?"

"Sure, Heather. Right after I organize my sock drawer and wash my hair."

I just realized that you might think I'm referring to Martha Stewart, which I totally am not, cuz she's a goober. I was referring to a mythical friend, who I randomly named Martha, but could also be named Andrea or Shelly.

Yeah, I've definitely lived with a girly-girl for too long... starkraving_mad January 10 2006, 18:50:44 UTC
Cause I wouldn't even blink if I heard elayla say that to a friend. I thought girls did that kind of thing?

Yes, well, as is made abundantly clear by my original post, I'm not much of a girly-girl. And my two best girlfriends live far away. And my ex was really good at fashion, but now he's an ex. So I've got to get out there on my own, and learn how to color-coordinate! Either that, or invest in a webcam to show my far-away girlfriends my closet...

I'd be happy to come over an look at your pants. I'm sure Stark would too.

See? I told you I married a girly one. starkraving_mad January 12 2006, 14:57:38 UTC
And I don't know that I'd go so far as to say I'd be happy to come over and look at your pants. But I would be willing to watch the wee one if you want elayla to come over.

Aww, you guys, if you keep being so nice to me, I'm gonna be sad to move!

I am actually wearing the brown pants today, with a rose-pink top, and brown shoes. (The socks are black, but if anyone's looking that closely, they deserve to see black socks.) So far, not a single person has recoiled in horror and exclaimed, "What the hell were you thinking?"

So I'll take that as a good sign. =)

My seester (the person who nudged me into buying the brown pants in the first place) is arriving Monday, so I'll force her to peruse my wardrobe with me this week and offer commentary on what else I might wear with these pants. But thanks so much for the offer!
