You and me baby ain't nothing but mammals

Hey, I have a few free minutes and decided I would write an ell jizzle to update you on my life.

I'm here in martha's vineyard working on the topsail schooner Shenandoah (www.blackdogtallships.com). It is an extremely sexy man-rig. We don't get very many time off, nor do we get paid much (75 bucks a week doesn't go very far) but it's an awesome experience and a fun job. I've learned a ton about saling allready and there is still an infinite amount to learn. I'm thinking this is something I want to get further into than just one summer on a boat. There are a lot of traveling oppurtunities for an experienced sailor. I have very little experience so far but all I can do is keep sailing and trying to learn as much as I can. While I'm no longer incompetent I've only recently started to regard myself as a sailor.

I've changed a lot since I arrived as a skinny pale kid who had never even set foot on a sailboat and who was somewhat afraid of heights. Physically I'm in some of the best shape of my life, after a series of painful burns I don't have to worry about being out in the sun all day. My hands and feet have turned to leather from the harsh fibers of the manilla rope. While I didn't consider myself afraid of heights when I got here I was by no means comfortable in the rigging. The masts run about 100 feet tall and the yards probably go out about 25 feet on both sides and we have to climb every inch of that. I got a little reckless earlier and was jumping off the crosstrees, which are about 64 feet up. When I jumped off though the springstay moved back and threw off my balance. I landed a little wrong but at that height there is no room for anything but a perfect landing so I started coughing up blood about 30 minutes later so I had to spend a night in the hospital while they xrayed and cat scanned me. It turned out I bruised the inside of my lung from the impact but I'm all good now. Kinda brought back my sanity a little. I also live a pretty minimalistic lifestyle and I wish I packed even less than what I did. I've started reading a lot of books for leisure which is something I haven't done since 8th grade.

I don't really know what else to mention. The weather is awesome and the atmosphere is pretty laid back at least with the locals. To get around one can hitch hike anywhere and we usually get picked up within 5-10 minutes of tossing up our thumbs. Even at 1 in the morning last night we were able to get a ride. I've talked to a few of you guys but I'd like to hear from the rest of you. You can email me at conseann3ry@hotmail.com or send me a real letter to PO Box 429, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.
