Losing Hans

Today, a very dear equine friend of mine passed away. His name was Hans, and he was the youngest of our school horses at Highlander Ranch. He was twelve.

The vet told us he thinks Hans had an aneurysm while in the stocks, that he tried eight different medications to try to keep him alive, but that none of it worked. He was only even at the Vet's office because he'd had a hematoma closing up the passage of his ear, and it needed to be drained...

And I'm so sad, and I'm so tired.

He was twelve, and he'd been a carriage horse and a police horse; he was ear-shy, and his back was so swayed it was like sitting in a ditch. He carried his head at a permanent angle because he'd had a fused vertebrae in his neck and it made him a bitch to steer with the reins, but I loved him somehow, anyway, inexplicably. I loved him.

I kept telling myself I would go out and ride him, before he went to the vet. Thought I would take him on a trail ride because sitting on him was like riding a couch, but it was always too hot, or too late, or I didn't have enough time. And now there is no time to do it, and I regret that, and I miss him.

I miss him.
