I've found that I stick with socks better when I use a self striping yarn. In theory a neat pattern might work too, but I haven't tested my attention span for that.

I was thinking some kind of combination of intarsia and embroidery for the heart and banner too. It just looks a bit to bulky with them all being individual appliques. It'd be really cute on the rear end of some diaper covers or on a little jacket.

I love making tiny things too. This is my second, but I didn't make much for my son when he was a baby. He just grew to darn fast, there's no way I could have gotten things done in time. At one point he was 3 months ahead of what size he was supposed to fit in. I still have trouble judging how old other people's babies are. I've tried to make up for it for making adorable baby clothes for babies of friends. I have no idea if they ever get used, but at least they were a joy to make and give. One recipient was just kind of like, "oh, cool...a baby blanket" while her mother just gushed over it. Her mom I've known since I was a little kid and she knows how to crochet, so she had a clue what went into the blanket. I made socks for my niece once, but I don't know if she even wears them. :/ I'm glad your family is open to the hand made gifts, it's always such a tough call. And thank you, my family is super excited.

Awww, I didn't make almost anything for my first either. I didn't know how to knit or crochet very well back then, so I just made him a small, simple blanket.

Dude, nothing is worse than the "oh..." when someone looks at something you've worked on for hours. Bummer. I guess I'm lucky enough with my family- they're a bunch of mooches! My sister in law asked if maybe I could make her a hat for her baby coming in Oct and by the end of the conversation she was asking for matching hats for them both, and hey, could I also make one in purple..? Hahaha, she's a hoot. I love her dearly, so I'll have fun making her baby stuff.

Next on my list is finally mastering socks! I have some really cute self striping sock yarn and it's the only way I can power through them. Cross your fingers for me?

Fingers crossed.

If you want any suggestions for sock patterns look up "Ann Marie: Pink Ribbon Stockings for Breast Cancer Awareness". The pattern is free, the designer just has a deal made with a yarn company where they donate money to breast cancer charities when people buy pink yarn from them. The pattern itself is pretty easy, the design is simple and one of the things I love the most is that it's a toe up pattern so you can make them as short or long as possible. I love the way the heel is made, even when I'm making a different sock pattern I use the Ann Marie heel.

Oh, those look great! I haven't tried a short row heel before, that looks really cute too. I am suddenly just really feeling making socks, I think I'll have to try some like that. Thanks for the recommendations!

And regarding the tardis phone cozy, that is awesome! My friend will love that, and it'll give me a good reason to embroider it.
