I like the stitch and bitch books by Debbie Stoller. There are two knitting books, one crochet book, and one "mixed" book I don't own (there are very few crochet patterns in that one).

The Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns
by Ann Budd

and

Sensational Knitted Socks
by Charlene Schurch

and I desperately want the new 'sockitecture' books by Cat Bordhi

the public library is awesome for this. I've checked out knitting books that I only used one or two ideas out of... but I figure if I've checked it out more than twice I might as well buy it :)

I love Erica Knight and my library! theshapka December 19 2007, 00:37:46 UTC
I love designs by Erica Knight...so I like all of her books, pretty much--even the baby knitting ones, and I have no kids, no nephews/nieces, no young sibs, etc.. I just really like her style. I haven't gotten to check out the new Harmony stitch guides that she edited, though. But, as my other favorite type of book is stitch/motif dictionaries, I think I'll like them, too.

I also like 1000 Great Knitting Motifs and pretty much any stitch dictionary because I'm more of an "interpretive" knitter and tend to introduce my own design elements or drift into designing my own patterns.

For instructional books, I second the Stitch 'n Bitch recommendation. The instructions are quite useful and the style is very appealing to me. I had a friend get me started knitting, but I learned/reviewed tons from S'nB.

Checking books out from the library (love your library!) or perusing at your LYS or local bookstore is a great way to see what's available and get a feel for what works for you.
