Compton, 45, was then taken to the county jail, charged with murdering his girlfriend on Friday and dumping her body in Greenwood County.
His motive was unclear, investigators say, though he was cooperative once they picked him up at about 3 p.m. Sunday.
"I'm not going to talk about him talking to us," Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said. "But, we do have enough to charge him."
The body of 46-year-old Karen Helton Chisholm was found off Highway 72 in Greenwood County on Friday.
Her identification stated she was from Spartanburg, and officers here confirmed her identity Saturday using her thumbprint.
Chisholm's family for years has lived on Evvalane Drive, a small neighborhood just north of Southport Road in the Cedar Springs community.
In the last year or so, she moved back to take care of her mother, a neighbor said.
"She was always very cheerful," said that woman, who asked not to be identified. "She was a very sweet girl. She was very outgoing. She liked animals and gardening and flowers, and things of that sort."
Chisholm leaves behind a daughter and a sister.
Investigators aren't sure how long she and Compton had been dating, though she seems to have stayed at his house on occasion. Some of her belongings were found there, not too far away at 171 Cedar Springs Road.
Executing a search warrant of that house Sunday revealed enough information to pinpoint that as the crime scene, Wright said. He declined to elaborate.
Chisholm died of multiple gunshot wounds, though investigators aren't sure how many shots were fired or what type of weapon was used.
I knew this family well. She was my "Godmother" and her daughter, my "Godsister." I grew up with them. Her daughter and i have been friends...family...since i was 4 years old. I'm in utter shock because though i havent talked to them in a while, and i know they have problems, i never expected this to happen. She has no one now, no one except me.
