Post-Christmas Rundown

*I finally saw Atonement. Maybe it was just the months and months of critical praise that had been heaped on it that left me disappointed, but it was definitely a let-down. I'm not one of those "the movie can never be as good as the book" snobs, but I think there's something about the novel that just didn't translate well. There's not much to ( Read more... )

I had no interest in that "Atonement" movie -- nothing seemed wrong with it, but it just didn't seem like the type of movie that interests me. But now I keep running into a bunch of stories bragging about a 5 and a half minute shot as if that's supposed to get me to drop my porn and head out to the theater. I always get extra hinky about a movie that isn't a bigtime action film that starts being advertised for some stunt, no matter if it could be cool.

That's probably the Dunkirk scene, which was just a bunch of soldiers mulling around a beach - the "war is hell" one I wrote about. It didn't really have anything to do with the plot and was one of the things that made the movie feel like it was dragging. This is also one of those movies that seems to think that in order to be important! and profound! it has to be needlessly long. There's no reason why it had to run over two hours with the storyline as it was.

I don't think you'd like it very much. To be honest, if I hadn't read the book, the film probably wouldn't have caught my interest based on the trailers.

Yeah, I didn't even know it was a book until I was trolling the "New Yorker"'s reviews for over-the-top shit. If it doesn't have Jughead, I'm not reading it. Their reviewer said pretty much the same as you, I'm sure it will make your week to know.

Since this is the last weekend of the NFL season, I'm afraid you'll have to get in line for that.

As if football season ending is anywhere near as bad as sharing an opinion with a movie critic from The New Yorker. At least you can show your face in public.

"Public" is for regular folk. You now have rarefied tastes and ideas. Dinner parties and clubs are all you shall know from now on. Prepare to see a lot of shitty plays and one person acts.
