[for defying_grawity & needs_a_leash] briefing

The office had a table, four chairs, and a fancy-looking flatscreen television. The first chair to be occupied was done so by a petite Asian woman, not likely older than twenty-five, in riding boots, jeans, and a smart blazer. Professional from the waist up, at least today. Her style could vary on a whim, due to a mission or some personal choice she wasn’t apt to talk about. Currently, she was reclining in the chair she’d chosen as seeming best for her, feet up on the table, twirling what appeared to be a pen from finger to finger on her right hand.

Also, she was sitting in the dark.

That didn’t last long, though, because the next time the door opened, the woman who stepped in turned on the light and immediately had a critique to make. “Should’ve known it was you, sittin’ in the dark like some sort of vampire.”

The first woman smiled and stilled her pen. She had always liked McCoy, a surgeon recruited from the military. The elder woman could switch from fierce momma bear, absurdly protective of her teammates, to an utter bitch, to a complete softy in the space of a few seconds. She could also pull off undercover southern belle like nobody’s business. “Oh, but, Lena, haven’t you missed me?”

“I’d rather miss you than have to get briefed on how to patch you back up this time, Sulu.” Lena dropped into the seat next to Hikari. “And take your damn boots off the table until we as least see who we’ve got to work with.”

“Yes ma’am.” Contrary to the polite words, Hikari was laughing as she sat up a bit straighter, slipping her boots to the floor and waiting.
