(Wake Up) Sid - The Man!

Whoa! I seem to have attracted a lot of attention by this particular Title. I was merely going to write a review of Wake Up Sid, the journey of A Boy to be The Man.
I absolutely love the 22 year old director - Ayan Mukerji for giving the female protagonist a meaty role to play. She is not your Stupid Bimbo Katrina Kaif-ish where all she needs is to get into a mess so that she can be rescued by The Man. Her character requires anything but dancing at different foreign locales or getting away with wearing a plastic smile throughout the movie; nor does she cry her eyes out or scream Bachao Bachao! The movie has no steamy scenes; thankfully bereft of any smooches *to justify the role*, so if that is what takes you to watch a movie, give this one a pass.

Music: After a debacle called What’s Your Raashee with 13 song-dance sequences, this movie has some AWESOME and yet not a single lip-sync song. The songs have been put into the background and they don’t eat into the storytelling time. You get to hear contemporary bollywood pop, folk fusions [two Iktara versions, I like the male version better], some amazing English pop/blues tracks and a bit of jazz too.  If any one finds the monsoon song from the movie, please pass it on to me.

Acting: Fabulous renditions by Konkona, Ranbir, Anupam Kher,Supriya Pathak, Rahul Khanna, the little boy , the chhotu and even Cashmera [How does she spell her name? I am bad with spellings!].

Cinematography: The movie was all about angles, I really liked the photographic angles which I presume was Ayan Mukerji’s find and vision.  You get to see Bombay [To hell with Raj Tacky-rey! Did I spell his name wrong?] all over again. But, this time I was reminded of a certain *Chhoti-si Baat*, the Parsi Aunties make a return briefly and so do the shoddy apartments in a certain *Ghar*. Not to mention, I adored the interiors of Konkona’s home and office. So chic, so cool, so creative and Sooooo Darn Fun.

Colours: The muddy chrome yellow is one recurrent shade throughout the movie and I have never liked it more, as mellow as a ripe papaya.

Characters: Ranbir Kapoor’s character is Joey from FRIENDS minus hitting on the girls. Just the kind of guy you would want to pamper and spoil and pamper and spoil, well... :)

Konkona is your independent chica looking for her little piece of blue sky.

Plot: There is nothing new in the story, it is about a spoilt rich brat, independence and individuality, the parent-kid clashes and yet, the freshness comes from the honesty of the emotions portrayed by the characters. The dialogues they speak are yours and mine, nothing filmy about it, nothing to sweep you off your feet but when you come back home you will have returned with a warm heart.

Summing up the movie: Rather be immature; rather have a heart that’s brave enough to take risks head on; a soul free of inhibitions to chase dreams, than to shield your insecurity and fears, and profess pragmatism!

PS: I lurved Ranbir’s funky T-shirts and I am kinda confused whom I love more, Ranbir Kapoor or Ayan Mukerji *rolls eyes dreamily*.
