New Bodhum, Gran Pulse, Tuesday

Aug 27, 2013 07:26

In deference to the fact that her friends knew very little about the world of Gran Pulse, Yeul had decided against dropping them in the middle of ruins on the first day.

Instead, she had settled on the seaside town of New Bodhum. Half of the town was built over the sea and the crystallized Cocoon could be seen in the distanceWhen night fell, New ( Read more... )

Talk the guards into letting you past! Just make sure you can defend yourself.

"Is it really so dangerous out there that you need to put a fence up?" Everything was so pretty here, it was difficult for Evan to reconcile the seaside town with anything outside of it that might warrant an armed guard.

“For civilians, it is,” one of the guards replied, friendly enough. Despite the guns they were carrying, the guards of New Bodhum were pretty laidback unless forced to be otherwise. “There’s worse locations but the monsters here can kill those who don’t know what they’re doing.”

"Oh..." Evan peered at the gate, briefly considering stretching up to see just how far he could look.

He wisely decided against startling anyone with sudden, unexpected powers. They had guns, and while 'monster' clearly meant animal-like beasts in particular out there, he really, really didn't want to be mistaken for one.

"It's weird to think of them out there," he admitted. "Everything here seems so peaceful."

They were doing pretty well at not shooting him for being blue! Neither he nor Liara were being subject to more than a few curious glances for their physical appearances.

Still, not startling the guards was generally a good idea.

“We’ve worked hard to make it that way,” the guard said, puffing out his chest a bit. “NORA looks out for the people!” More seriously, he added, “They’ve gotten past the fence a few times but don’t worry, we’ll look after everyone.”

"Oh, I'm not all that worried," Evan replied, grinning. It was true enough. After all, he'd spent his weekend fighting dinosaurs. And cavemen. And cowboys. And robots...

He could probably hold his own.

"I mean, you guys have been doing this for a while now, right? The monsters probably don't even see you coming when you're on the job."

It was sad, really how earnest that statement was.

The sentiment was appreciated. More often the guards got complaining and people attempting to slide past them.

“It’s been two hundred years,” the guard laughed. “I should hope we’re good at this now.”

"That long?" Evan looked at the gate again, somewhat awestruck. "Where do the monsters all come from?"

Were they just the typical wildlife out here? Coexistence wasn't an option, was it? Were they just all really that violent?

"This place is nothing like I expected when Yeul invited us to visit."

Granted, he hadn't really been sure what to expect.

“You skip history, kid?” For all that he laughed, the man sounded kind. “Not that I blame you. School was never my favourite thing. That’s why I’m a guard.”

“All that he’s good for,” the other guard put in.

“Shut up,” the guard said with another laugh. “It’s been two hundred years since Cocoon fell, and we had no choice but to move. A lot of the monsters come from Cocoon, the military were big into bio-genetically engineering monsters.” He shrugged, almost philosophically. “Not all of them come from there though. Gran Pulse has plenty of nasties all by itself and theirs get bigger.”

"So... people made those?" Evan could feel his insides twisting a little at the idea. Growing monsters in labs kind of struck a sore note with him. "D-did they think they could control those things, or were they just hoping to, I don't know... unleash them and watch them destroy whatever they could catch?"

He balled his hands into fists and took a deep breath. This was history, just as the guard had said. But it sounded horrible.

“Can’t speak for people long dead,” the guard said, “but some of them were more controllable than others. The dog-hybrids were used pretty regularly, if I’m remembering my history right. The others… maybe you’re right and they just planned to unleash them. Or maybe they were going to study them.”

The guard smiled a little.

“Don’t worry about it, kid. That’s all history. The Director of Academia doesn’t go for that sort of thing. If he authorizes anything made, it’s pure automata, nothing biological about it.”

Evan nodded a little, turning his face toward the ground so that the guard wouldn't see just how grim his expression had gone.

Weaponized robots weren't really hugely comforting for a little mutant kid, either.

"I think I prefer my dog just the way he is," he decided, and Ozzy gave a wag of his tail, mostly just happy that Evan was looking at him again. This place had smells and he wanted to go out and explore them, but since now was clearly leash-time, he'd settle for being looked at. "Thank you for the history lesson, sir."

He’d probably love to know some of the robots had gone feral and were out in the wilderness too…

“Hey, no problem,” the guard said, with a shrug. “Run along now, go swimming, have fun. Don’t worry so much about the monsters.”

"I'll try not to," Evan replied, and by the time he looked up again, he was wearing a slightly forced smile. "I am on vacation, after all. Come on, Ozzy... I'll throw a stick for you if you promise not to run off, boy."

Ozzy just barked and wagged his tail, and then boy and dog both turned and headed back into town.
