In deference to the fact that her friends knew very little about the world of Gran Pulse, Yeul had decided against dropping them in the middle of ruins on the first day.
Instead, she had settled on the seaside town of

He wisely decided against startling anyone with sudden, unexpected powers. They had guns, and while 'monster' clearly meant animal-like beasts in particular out there, he really, really didn't want to be mistaken for one.
"It's weird to think of them out there," he admitted. "Everything here seems so peaceful."

Still, not startling the guards was generally a good idea.
“We’ve worked hard to make it that way,” the guard said, puffing out his chest a bit. “NORA looks out for the people!” More seriously, he added, “They’ve gotten past the fence a few times but don’t worry, we’ll look after everyone.”

He could probably hold his own.
"I mean, you guys have been doing this for a while now, right? The monsters probably don't even see you coming when you're on the job."
It was sad, really how earnest that statement was.

“It’s been two hundred years,” the guard laughed. “I should hope we’re good at this now.”

Were they just the typical wildlife out here? Coexistence wasn't an option, was it? Were they just all really that violent?
"This place is nothing like I expected when Yeul invited us to visit."
Granted, he hadn't really been sure what to expect.

“All that he’s good for,” the other guard put in.
“Shut up,” the guard said with another laugh. “It’s been two hundred years since Cocoon fell, and we had no choice but to move. A lot of the monsters come from Cocoon, the military were big into bio-genetically engineering monsters.” He shrugged, almost philosophically. “Not all of them come from there though. Gran Pulse has plenty of nasties all by itself and theirs get bigger.”

He balled his hands into fists and took a deep breath. This was history, just as the guard had said. But it sounded horrible.

The guard smiled a little.
“Don’t worry about it, kid. That’s all history. The Director of Academia doesn’t go for that sort of thing. If he authorizes anything made, it’s pure automata, nothing biological about it.”

Weaponized robots weren't really hugely comforting for a little mutant kid, either.
"I think I prefer my dog just the way he is," he decided, and Ozzy gave a wag of his tail, mostly just happy that Evan was looking at him again. This place had smells and he wanted to go out and explore them, but since now was clearly leash-time, he'd settle for being looked at. "Thank you for the history lesson, sir."

“Hey, no problem,” the guard said, with a shrug. “Run along now, go swimming, have fun. Don’t worry so much about the monsters.”

Ozzy just barked and wagged his tail, and then boy and dog both turned and headed back into town.
