1 Friday
9:30 PM North By Northwest (1959)
If you haven't seen this classic Hitchcock film, you really should. Cary Grant runs, and runs and runs...
2 Saturday
2:00 AM Head (1968)
The Monkees star in this... peculiarly self-referential (and sometimes existential) feature, written by Jack Nicholson(!). Features cameos by Annette Funicello, Teri Garr (back before anyone knew who she was) and Frank Zappa, plus special guest Victor Mature. California governor Ronald Reagan appears in a clip of news footage, and Bela Lugosi in a clip from The Black Cat. Also features several great songs you've probably never heard. From the makers of Easy Rider. An amazing act of self-destruction (not entirely willing, apparently.)
3:30 AM Tommy (1975)
Ken Russell (Lair of the White Worm) dirests this adaptation of The Who's rock opera. Roger Daltrey is Tommy. With Elton John, Tina Turner, Oliver Reed, Ann-Margaret and Jack Nicholson (again? He sings in this one, folks...) Insane.
8:00 AM Misty (1961)
Wild horse adoption movie, set (and filmed) in Chincoteague Virginia. It's a "family picture," so watch at your own risk. From the director of "Flipper"and several episodes of "Batman.
3 Sunday
9:45 PM Spirited Away (2002)
I just think it's cool that they show this a couple of times a year:)
12:00 AM He Who Gets Slapped (1924)
Lon Chaney stars as a disgraced scientist who retreats to a career as a circus clown. It's got the necessary Chaney ingredients: tragedy, grotesquerie (Clown makeup, but still...), unrequited love, and just a touch of vengeance.
4 Monday
4:30 PM Thunder Road (1958)
Maybe not the first movie about moonshine-runners, but certainly the first big budget moonshine movie. With Robert Mitchum.
8:00 PM Algie, the Miner (1912)
Wow, that's an old movie!
8:30 PM Monster, The (1925)
A mad scientist engineers car wrecks so he can experiment on the survivors. With Lon Chaney. I can't wait. I hope there's a gorilla, or at least a midget.
5 Tuesday
6:00 AM Beach Party (1963)
7:45 AM Bikini Beach (1964)
9:30 AM Beach Blanket Bingo (1965)
11:15 AM Ride the Wild Surf (1964)
1:00 PM Gidget (1959)
Beach, beach, beach, all the time...
6:30 PM F for Fake (1973)
Another chance at this loopy but brilliant Orson Welles doc.
8:00 PM High Sierra (1941)
Bogart is an ex-con who sets out to pull one last job. Yeah, that'll go well.
6 Wednesday
11:45 AM Bowery at Midnight (1942)
AKA "Dark Eyes of London," so that'll tell you how much "Bowery" is actually in it. English crime/horror quickie with Bela Lugosi as a philanthropic doctor who's really the head of a bizarre gang.
7 Thursday
8:00 PM Bound For Glory (1976)
Hey, look! A serious David Carradine movie! He plays Woodie Guthrie in this two-and-a-half-hour-long bio-pic.
10:30 PM Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (1977)
I haven't seen this in a dog's age. I wonder if I can still take it seriously?
