So Saturday I had to make a run to Lowes to get some hardware needed for my current networking project. Sarah had stayed the night to hang out with Ria, Chris, and I, and needed to make a run home. Chris, Sarah, and I hopped in my car, headed to her place, and on whim I decided to stop into Fantastic Games & Toys... My old games shop (as in D&D) that was turned into a place with lots of toys, and almost no games, but they had comics and I still have not gotten my hands on Robotech: The Shadow Chronicals #5, so even though I hated the changes to my game store, it was worth stopping by for the chance that they had it.
Well I walk in and I am instantly greeted by the owner, Scott. A quick look around shows lots of bare areas so something is obviously going on... First of all seeing Scott again in his store was cool, and a surprise, second all of the toys had been removed and it looked like games stuff had been pushed back to the forefront again. Almost instantly the shop felt like home again.
So Scott and I get to talking... He is back in control of the shop, and the other guy (also named Scott) has taken the toys and moved on. Scott had burned out entirely last year, and put is friend "Toy Scott" in charge of the shop. While Toy Scott was in charge some bills had not been paid, the games had been pushed out in favor of toys and comics... All and all the reason why I and several others had stopped going.
After he catches me up on the story, he then lets me know that the shop is moving (to get his inventory down there are good sales on what he has left, check it out). They are moving into some office space near Ranch 99 in Edmonds/Lynnwood. Good deal on rent, near bus routes, better condition, etc.
Then the kicker... He wants to change the store into more of a co-op... Members helping members, book borrowing, putting on small gaming conventions, etc. and he is looking for people to help with that... People like me. I am not sure what to think about that, but his shop in the 4 locations he has had since I started gaming have always felt a little like home, so I am leaning towards giving it a go.
In the last year he has become a bit of a God Child with talk about "following the path", and "god shall provide". While I may not believe, I do have to agree that chance that I and others that just happened to stop in the 2 weeks since he has found the shop a new home and possible new direction, after several months of not us not going, do give you some of a glimpse of lucky we can be sometimes over wanting to read the last of a comic in a series.
We will see what comes from it. I am going to try to stop by again and see what other deals I can get, and maybe help him move the shop.
After that adventure we stopped in at some PC shops and got Sarah some new DVD drives since hers were dying, dropped her off at Sacha's, hit Lowes, finished digging the trench that Bryce had mostly dug, and connected up some of the pipes.
All and all a busy and interesting day.
P.S. - Fantasic Games has a website now
www.fantasticgamesandtoys.com/ Nothing special yet, but I bet pictures of the new shop will be up there when they start moving in.
