I think I get what you mean by feeling like a rookie again! I did almost no writing this calendar year until well into summer, and it felt like stumbling and hobbling around, relearning how to walk, nothing I tried writing having any spark or grace or authenticity. Still does, though I've at least now I can get from point A to B.
Maybe other people just continually progress -- either sticking with it or else quitting, not going in boom-and-bust cycles -- and therefore don't need the comm. :)
These are just random thoughts and desires about format, and I am not in the least ruffled if it goes quite a different way. But for what it's worth:
I suspect I should like some of your prompts, because you generally pull interesting things from classes, having to do with style and structure, so that I actually learn something by doing the exercises. Deadlines of a week will never do it for me when school's in, though -- a month would be more likely.
Yes, I am asking you to basically set up the sort of class that it seems you yourself are thinking of taking. I am an ingrate. :) Again, in a wish-fulfillment sort of world. I know it may not really be the practical or fair. Perhaps I should get off my butt and find a course of my own.
Another thing I suspect would help me is simply seeing people post snippets of what they are working on and their current question (whether the question is more asking for a specific type of feedback or "where can I learn what it's like to drive on Siberian roads, because my characters are supposed to do that in this story, and IDEK???") But that seems more like a matter of making writer friends who would post these things on their personal journals -- even a meme. Heck, this sort of thing I would happily create, if I had hope I could induce people to use it...
Well, actually I think I would enjoy sharing the class with you (and anyone else that's interested.) Why don't we plan on it? My class doesn't start until September 28, but we can brainstorm a new format, one that's a little more writer's group/online class focused. It might just be you, me, and realityanalyst if she's interested, but I don't mind.
Do you mind holding down the fort for another month or so, and then say, on September 14 we'll start playing with the format? I have some prompts that are more classroom-like; they're sort of a progressive exploration of creative inspiration, I guess. And then I'll do an online version of the class and see what it stirs up? And then afterward we could just do a monthly prompt or goal, and invite people to post what they are working on or what they need help with?
I can definitely keep going till September 14. Lots of prompt ideas still banked.
How long does your class go on? (That is, we are going to start experimenting with the format for more than a week between 9/14-9/28, yes -- or were you thinking of sharing ideas from the class as you took it?)
I was thinking that we'd do a week or two of piloting a few new or different kind of prompt posts, and then I'd share assignments as the class went on, although probably not weekly, probably bi-weekly? I don't know because I don't know what the class will be like (I am making this all up as I go ...)
I will work during the next weeks of mornings to see if I can't possibly do any more recruitment. Because who knows who is out there -- it's been a while since I looked.
