I don't think it's just this year. Politics has been extremely divisive and passion-invoking since...at least as long as I could vote. In 2000, there was that whole mess about counting and discounting votes in Florida and Nader stealing Democrat votes. In 2004, there were people joking that the liberal coastal regions would become part of Canada. In 2008, we had a black man running for President and a woman wingnut running for VP, each of which incited a lot of serious incendiary commentary, and shortly after Obama got elected came the Tea Party movement and Birtherism. Makes you wonder how we've managed to stay back together since the Civil War.
