Character Information

General
Canon Source: Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days (Roxas also appears in Kingdom Hearts 2, as well as the very end of Chain of Memories, but will be taken from prior to either of those points.)
Canon Format: Video game
Character's Name: Roxas
Character's Age: 15 physically, a hair under a year since he was born as a Nobody from Sora losing his heart Roxas is now 16. Or 2, depending how you count.

What form will your character's NV take? A Motorola Droid, which includes a standard keypad, camera for still photos and videos, and standard black headset. When not in use, he will keep it in a plain black protective sleeve case.

Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities: Roxas has a plethora of abilities common to any action-RPG protagonist (scan, high-jump, etc.) but ones that truly matter in an RP setting can be boiled down to magic and swordplay skill. Through wielding the keyblade, Roxas can cast a number of largely elemental spells: fire, blizzard, thunder, aero, and cure, all of which are attack spells except for cure, a healing spell. He isn't a naturally gifted spellcaster, but he is competent at using them effectively in battle. His true strength in combat lies in using the keyblade against many kinds of enemies-he's only good at using a single type of weapon, but he can fight well against any sort of enemy. (At least any sort that he's faced so far.) On one of his missions, he fought with a stick instead of a sword, so he's not completely helpless without one...though a stick won't be his first choice. Also, while the game does not show this, canon states that the Samurai-class Nobodies serve Roxas, so he has some control over them, although this is likely due to their having been conditioned to be subservient, and not a supernatural ability of his.

Weapons: Roxas wields the keyblade, a sword-like weapon whose blade takes the shape of (wait for it) a key. It can change shape according to various accessories he attaches to it but its primary characteristics remain the same. Along with being a suitable offensive weapon, the keyblade can magically open many locks, seal the locks contained in various worlds, and release hearts when it is used to defeat the Heartless. As a member of Organization XIII, Roxas collected them to become a part of the heart-conglomerate Kingdom Hearts. At the time from which I am taking him, the portion of Roxas' power that went to Xion has returned to him, and he is able to summon and wield one keyblade in each hand-specifically, the weapons Oathkeeper and Oblivion.

History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History: Once upon a time-just under a year ago-there was a boy named Sora. He was a hero and the chosen wielder of the keyblade, and in order to free a beloved friend's heart, he used the keyblade to sacrifice his own and became one of the dark creatures known as a Heartless. What was left behind when his heart was taken away was a Nobody, beings made of body and soul. Normally, Nobodies become unusual-looking creatures not all that different from the Heartless, but because Sora had a very strong heart, his Nobody retained its shape as a human boy who looked very much like Sora.

This was Roxas.

Though Sora only spent a little while as a Heartless before being restored, Roxas continued to exist independently as Sora went on to defeat the villain he was after, encounter a strange place called Castle Oblivion, have his memories scrambled, and willingly go to sleep for a year so they could be unscrambled, all without him or Roxas knowing the other one existed, or that they were incomplete without each other. In fact, Roxas knew almost nothing right after he was born. He was found by Xemnas, the leader of a group of strong Nobodies called Organization XIII, and given his name: "Roxas" is just a re-arranged "Sora" with an X. With nowhere else to go and nothing else to do, Roxas completed the Organization as member XIII.

While Roxas retained Sora's basic image and many of his abilities, he had none of Sora's memories, with the exception of memory flashes that occurred during certain Organization missions. Even as these flashes grew in frequency, Roxas did not understand them or realize who Sora was. Fellow Organization member Axel was the first person to pay Roxas significant attention, though Roxas was not able to take much interest in his surroundings at first-in Axel's words, he was kind of a zombie for that first week. Roxas was sent on missions with several of his fellow members in order to learn, but as he grew more in control of himself, as if coming out from a daze, Axel was the one who remained his primary mentor, and his first friend-if beings who cannot truly feel, due to lacking hearts, can have friends.

Soon after Roxas became an active member of the Organization, a surprise new member was introduced-Xion, member XIV. When Axel and several other members were dispatched to Castle Oblivion (for the events of the game Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories), Roxas got the chance to work with her, and found her to be just as quiet as he had been. He didn't even see her face at first. Another startling common point between them was Xion's ability to also summon and wield a keyblade, something no one else in the Organization could do. As they worked together, they slowly began a friendship, one that was interrupted by Roxas abruptly falling into a weeks-long coma one day (triggered by Namine's rearranging of Sora's memories in Castle Oblivion.) When Roxas woke up, he learned two things: that Xion had kept vigil for him, returning to his bedside every day to place a shell beside him, and that everyone who had gone to Castle Oblivion had been lost. A sign of a growing friendship and the end of one.

Except Axel's not dead after all, and he soon surprised Roxas by returning unharmed. Surprised in turn by the growing bond between Roxas and Xion, Axel began spending time with them despite some implied reservations, and the three of them formed a real friendship, tied together by their daily trips to Twilight Town's clock tower, where they would sit, talk and eat sea salt ice cream together.

As time went by, Roxas learned of the stated purpose of Organization XIII-to collect and brings hearts together in order to make Kingdom Hearts and become whole-even as he began to question what this really meant and what his purpose was. He also worried more and more for Xion due to events such as her temporary inability to summon a keyblade, her own lapse into sudden sustained unconsciousness, and her disappearance from the Organization after growing more distant from Roxas and Axel. His misgivings grew to alarm after he observed that no one seemed to care about Xion but him, and even Axel seemed to be hiding things, and treated Xion harshly when he and Roxas went to bring her back. Having experienced more and more memory flashes of Sora during his missions, Roxas felt he could no longer trust the Organization or understand its motives. Even Axel, who had been his close friend and confidante all that time, was no longer behaving in a way Roxas could accept. (Unbeknownst to Roxas, Axel was aware of Xion's true nature and was torn between his duties and his friendship.) When Xion left the Organization a second time, Roxas decided that enough was enough and followed in her footsteps, fighting his way out of the castle and coolly putting off Axel when his friend pointed out that the Organization would destroy him for his defiance. Roxas declared that no one would miss him, and seemed to honestly believe it-despite the fact that he'd left a final gesture of friendship behind him in Axel's room: a "WINNER" stick left over from a purchase of ice cream that Roxas had been waiting to give to his friend for most of the game, hoping to eventually have one for both Axel and Xion.

Despite his strong resolve to leave, Roxas found he had no idea where to go, and went to the usual spot on the clock tower, where Xion surprised him by joining him. It was then that she revealed the true purpose behind her existence to a confused Roxas (though the player of the game gets clearer information than Roxas himself does): she was not a Nobody, but a Replica based on Sora's leaked memories of Kairi, meant to both serve as a backup in case the Organization could not use Roxas or Sora and, and eventually absorb Roxas, fusing the pieces of Sora that she'd siphoned with Sora's Nobody in order to create a whole 'Sora' who would be fully controllable by the Organization. She was also responsible for Roxas' recent weakening. The two of them could not co-exist, and as long as she was alive, Sora's memories could not be restored, and he would never wake up.

Xion transformed into a distorted version of herself and attacked Roxas in an attempt to absorb him and his power, just as the Organization had intended after adapting its plan for her, and Roxas was forced to fight her. After a lengthy battle, she fell to the ground as herself again. Already, Roxas was starting to forget who she was, due to Xion's origin. Since she was based on some of Sora's memories, after returning to him, no one would be able to remember her. This was Xion's plan, making her attack on Roxas a ruse: she had chosen to disappear back into Sora rather than endanger Roxas further. As he held her dying in his arms, she assured him that this was not his fault-that she had chosen this, and that he had to promise not to let Xemnas' plans for Kingdom Hearts come to fruition. After telling him that she was glad she got the chance to know him and Axel, she died/disappeared, leaving a seashell behind and triggering Roxas' first-ever tears. Only then did he remember her name once more, as he received the portion of power that she had previously absorbed from him.

Enraged and bereft, left with nothing in the wake of Xion's death and the loss of Axel's friendship, Roxas charged the Organization's castle in the World That Never Was, a keyblade in each hand. He would have been intercepted by Riku, who was determined to stop this seeming-suicide mission so that the part of Sora that existed in Roxas could one day be restored. However, before they could meet, an inconsiderate roleplayer plucked him from canon to apply at sirenspull.

Point in Canon: Near the end of Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days-specifically day 357, after defeating Xion but before facing off with Riku.

Character Personality: Roxas is a young man who is just now learning how to be. He can walk, fight, dress himself, stay alive-but all the things related to interacting and connecting with people are foreign to him, and learning them doesn't come easily. When he starts out in Days, he's simply taking everything in, processing the sensory input that comes with existing independently from Sora. This is why he's such a 'zombie' at first-with no memories and no experience doing...well, much of anything, there's very little to base a personality on. But day by day, he begins to grow one.

Once he begins to come out of his initial post-creation stupor, Roxas is somewhat complacent, accepting certain facts that the Organization gives him: what Kingdom Hearts is, why hearts are important, why he should stay with them. He also keeps a diary at the suggestion of Saix even though he does not understand its purpose, another example of his willingness to go along with others' desires in the absence of his own. At the same time, he shows a certain amount of curiosity about himself and the world around him. He wants to understand why a heart will make him whole; he wants to know more about friends and what they do together when Axel declares them friends; he wants to know why certain places and experiences feel familiar, even though he has no memories. At the same time, Roxas is not overly outgoing, so he tends to deal with his curiosity by gathering experiences, listening to people, and observing the world around him rather than peppering others with questions. He ponders things he doesn't understand in private (in his mind, or writing them down in his diary) or occasionally with Xion and Axel, the only people he is truly close to. Yet not even they hear all of the many questions about hearts, friendship, and his own purpose that Roxas asks himself in his diary. He is also a somewhat literal person, not quite getting Axel's metaphors about post-mission offtime being "the icing on the cake." After all, they're having ice cream, not cake.

The question of how Roxas feels about people is an interesting one, considering that since he is a Nobody, he lacks a heart to feel with-or so it seems. Even though emotions are (once again) something he doesn't understand, he clearly exhibits signs of having them at various times, sometimes manifesting physically, such as when he believes Axel to be dead and has a "weird feeling, like something is blocking [his] throat." He shows anxiety when Axel and Xion are missing or in danger, and relief when they are safe. Roxas is the one who insists on searching for Xion when she goes missing, and as time goes by, he is able to smile and laugh and enjoy his friends' company. These aren't the actions of someone incapable of feeling emotion, but they are the actions of someone who doesn't understand emotion or know what to do with it.

As Roxas' skills, curiosity and capacity for friendship grow, he becomes a loyal person, but not primarily to the Organization. Though he goes through most of the game without trying to break away from it, it's his friends who he looks out for first, whether that means hiding Xion's temporary inability to summon the keyblade or giving Axel a pass on his rough treatment of Xion when they go to retrieve her. Sometimes he learns more about himself by choosing obligation of his conscience, such as when he turns his back on an in-distress Tinkerbell due to Organization orders, only to realize that he regrets his choices. Roxas the individual slowly becomes distinct from Roxas, Member XIII. He begins to show that he does have a sense of humor through the occasional sarcastic but not mean-spirited joke, and the questions about who he is begin to turn outside as he grows more curious about what other people think and feel. Even when he thinks he doesn't understand, his actions tend to speak louder than words. He doesn't think he has any "precious things" that Xaldin talks about, but he recognizes that the idea of losing his friends makes him scared; he doesn't always know what friends do (besides eat ice cream together) but when Xion falls unconscious, he returns her favor of keeping track of the day with shells. If asked what the right action to take is, Roxas might not be able to articulate it, but he'd probably find a way to do it anyway.

When it comes to interacting with people he's not close to, Roxas is somewhat quiet without being completely shy, and a little awkward without being completely socially inept. His inability to fully connect with people comes from his lack of memories and understanding of people, but he still retains some of Sora's kindness and likeability. When visiting other worlds, he never makes the kind of friendships that Sora does during his travels, but the few people he meets seem willing enough to spend time around him.

By the end of 358/2 Days, Roxas is certain of two things: 1) He wants Axel, Xion and himself to just be able to be friends and have ice cream together, regardless of anyone else's plans 2) even if he doesn't know who he is or where he came from, he's done with letting other people guide his fate; he will decide for himself who he is. If his ability to feel was in question before, by now it is certain, shown by his tears for Xion as she dies, and his rage when Riku halts his attack on the Organization. This is a boy who is feeling deep grief. Yet he doesn't show only negative emotions; despite his loss of trust in Axel, his parting gift of the "WINNER" ice cream stick and his statement that he wants to have ice cream again with both his friends shows his capacity for forgiveness and his remaining loyalty to the people who matter most. After being used and betrayed by the Organization, he's less trusting and has grown a layer of cynicism that wasn't there before. It's not impossible to reach him emotionally, but he'll be far warier of people who might want to use him and his abilities than before.

Appearance/PB: Full-body image here. Roxas is still physically a mid-teen, and looks it. He's not the shortest person around, but he's got a ways to grow, so tall adults will loom over him. He's trim and in good physical shape, capable of being very active in combat and exploration, but not overly muscled. Unsurprisingly, his face looks just like Sora's, but his dark blonde hair (with a slightly different spike arrangement) sets them apart. He wears the Organization uniform: a long black, hooded, zip-up coat and shoes. Presumably pants are under there somewhere.
