You are Chardonnay, but never drink it. How does that work?

White wine is bollocks.

And I wanted to talk to you.

Yeah, well, my black eye and headache says you did.

That's not it, though. Riley's being discharged after lunch. Pat and me are coming over tomorrow to watch him for the night. You and Tara need some time alone together. We've booked you into the Princeton Marriot. No arguments.

Wait... nay, it's okay. You dinnae need to do that. We cannae... he... shit, I dinnae want to be away from him so soon after he's out of hospital.

He's almost 100%, mate. They wouldn't be letting him out if he wasn't. It's only one night. You both need time together to recharge after everything's that happened. When was the last time you both just had intimate time together? Just sleep, make love, spend time together, reconnect. I promise your son will be fine. We'll have you on speeddial on the chance that anything happens.

I dinnae know. It's too soon.

To soon for what? To make love with your wife and spend some quiet time alone with her for the night?

I know what you're meaning, mate, but the Marriott is just on the other side of town. I really will call if the slightest thing changes. We'll take care of him at your place. He'll be in his own bed. Tara can leave milk for us. The insulin the BSL checks, it's all cool. I'm a doctor, Pat's a nurse. It'll be okay. You're going to have to be able to leave him sooner or later, mate. Or you'll never want him out of your sight.

Fuck. Aye, aye... I dinnae even know why I'm arguing here. You're right. If I keep fearing for the bairn and letting it take over, our marriage might start to suffer. I havenae had much sleep. I'm nay thinking straight.

I think it'll take a lot for it to suffer, but it'll strain. You can't tell me you don't want to curl up in bed with Tara for the whole night. You aren't being an less a father to need time to recharge, mate. The opposite, actually.

You dinnae how much I want it. It's just hard. I knew it was all going to be hard, I just didnae think it would be this exhausting. You have to know, Riley, that I dinnae think for a minute that you or Pat cannae take care of the wee one for us. It isnae that at all. It's just reactionary. We couldnae ask for better hands for him to be in.

Hell, mate. Of course we know that. You're just trying to do your best and you've been under a lot of stress. You just want him safe and healthy. You're his Dad. Tara's his Mum. You two will always be immaculate in the job. But you need to feed your marriage, too. After the week of painful misunderstandings, you need to spend some time together. So go and you can come back first thing the next day if you want to. He'll be fine.

Aye, of course he will. And cheers, buddy. I think this is exactly what Tara and I need right now.
