If you find yourself wishing there was something [more] you could do to help with the Katrina relief efforts, consider becoming a volunteer in Disaster Services at your local Red Cross chapter. Not only will you have the opportunity to help folks out locally on an ongoing basis (when there's a house fire, the residents are just as homeless as those caught up in something bigger), but in future you will likely have the opportunity to go and help out when there's something big like this. Going on national assignments isn't for everybody (as it often means taking 2 or 3 weeks off of work), but you can help out in other ways, too, like filling in back home for those from your local chapter who *are* able to go.
I've never gone on a national assignment; not sure if I ever will (though I'd like to). But the opportunities are there; it just takes some planning ahead. (For me, the pivotal event was 9/11.)
