Why Celebrity Charity Poker Is So Much Fun...

Okay strangenesses of strangenesses: for the last few weeks I've been flipflopping faster than a sous chef at dinner time about whether to take the job at YOU/Huisgenooit as their Entertainment Editor.

For the Defense:
* The company is reputable, and the titles, although still celeb mags, are a little more prestigious than my previous employer. Plus, chances are I won't have to write stupid stories about Paris Hilton and Tom Cruise. Her-cu-les!!!
* It'll be fun going out to functions, meeting lotsa peoples etc.
* Three all-important words: free theatre tickets!

For the Prosecution:
* Long hours, late nights, working parts of weekends is gonna make me a little scarce on my own social scene. According to the lady who's leaving, "Say goodbye to your social life."

Anyway, last night tipped the tables in favour of the Defense, who'd like to add, in their defense, that it looks like not as much work as what the Leaving Girl is doing now, due to some reshuffling. Basically, I'd have to cover the social scene pages (2 per week) and the occasional celeb profile. Sounds very do-able to me. Just need to learn who all these wannabes are as I'm not so good with the recognising.
The function was a Celeb Charity Poker & Roulette Tournament, where 10 local schlebs were invited and played with the casino's money. The overall winner got R118,000 (NT590,000) for the charity of their choice. But even the losers got to give R18,000 (NT90,000) to charity. The celebs were awesome, and I chatted to quite a few of them. I had enormous fun. The photographer, who was so green, he was virtually a shrubbery, took amazing pictures, including THE GOLD - a shot of Shannon Ezra and Charl Beukes snogging. This is Gold cos' one (of more) of them bats for the other team, and they were clearly faking it. Nontheless, the readers will Lap It Up! Anyway, the point is, assuming all works out and I get/take the position, my life is gonna centre very much around the Social Scene for the next while.
Sure it'll be vacuous, but everyone keeps telling me I'm perfect for it. My thinking, so long as I still have time to Write That Long Overdue Book, and whip ass in Kaluki, I'm there. RSVP-ing for two...
