I survived another BPS!

This past weekend was part II of the AMC "Best Picture Showcase", a movie marathon where you get to see every best picture nominee. They had it spread over two weekends, since there were ten nominees this year (I still think having that many nominees was stupid), and naturally I went to both. After watching all of them, here are my favorites in order just for funzies. (Note that this is not a prediction of who's going to win - it's just me ranking them in order of enjoyment).

1) Inglourious Basterds
2) A Serious Man
3) The Hurt Locker
4) An Education
5) Precious/Up In The Air/Avatar/District 9 (Yes, I know this is a cop-out, but I really couldn't decide)
6) Up
7) The "Silence Is Golden" commercial, telling everyone to silence their cell phones before the start of each film
8) The "AMC: Experience The Difference" commercial before the start of each film
9) The Blind Side

See, I KNEW I wasn't going to like "The Blind Side"...I just didn't realize HOW much I wasn't going to like it. I can't remember a movie ever filling me with quite so much blinding, unadulterated rage as this one did. The COMPLETE lack of character development, the mind-blowingly irritating cutesy-son character who talked like an adult, the complete glossing-over of racial issues, the fact that it was all about how wonnnnnderful this white woman was instead of being about the adopted son WHO WAS ACTUALLY INTERESTING, the not-so-subtle Christian themes, the fact that Michael's drug-addicted mother was not only lucid and coherent but had perfect alabaster-white teeth...holy fuck, I can't even talk about it, I can feel my face getting hot as we speak.

On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, "The Hurt Locker" did NOT disappoint. I actually did get teary-eyed during a certain point in the sniper standoff, which I won't specify because I'm afraid it'll take away from it if you haven't seen it yet. Bigelow definitely deserves best director.

And yes, I'm aware that I haven't talked about myself in this journal in quite some time. I should probably remedy that soon.
