Feeling lost and empty after Deathy Hallows...

I just can't shake the feeling of loss that came with finishing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

On general terms, I was content with the book, the plot, and the climax. It was definitely not my favourite Harry Potter of the 7, but I enjoyed reading it.

Too many deaths, though. Far, far too many deaths.

A handful of characters that I cherished ( Read more... )

Me too. Didn't care for it at all.

And I know this is going to sound horrible... I know that Harry naming his children Albus Severus, James, and Lily was supposed to be touching and heart-warming.... but it just made me feel, well.. weird. It was almost a touch creepy. I can't explain why. It just didn't sit right with me. The whole scene was a bit confusing on first-read, with all the new names and faces. I DID however, laugh at Harry telling Albus to give Professor Neville "love". I thought that was cute.

I'm in shock about Lupin and Fred, two of my favourites. Lupin was hands-down my favourite Hogwarts teacher, and I loved the Weasley twins. LOVED them. What purpose was served in killing off these characters?! They took a little piece of me with them when they went. Is there something here I'm missing? Is there something integral to the plot that required them to die? Now George has to run Weasley's Wizard Wheezes by himself, and Harry has not ONE living soul left who was tied to his parents. That last connection burnt out with Lupin.

It was all just a bit much for me, being the giant mush that I am.

I found all those new-old names to be confusing! At first I was like, James? Lily? Albus? WTF? Aren't they all...you know...D-E-A-D? Then I figured it out, and I have to agree that it was a little creepy. I mean, maybe giving the children all those names as middle names, passing on the legacy and all that blah blah blah, but can't they have their own first names? I'm one of these people who loathes the tradition of naming sons after fathers after grandfathers. Does the same family really need three John Andrews? No.

I guess it's war, and that means people have to die. The issue of who dies and who lives is a touchy one when you're a writer. You don't kill off any of the loved characters, and it's not realistic. You kill off too many of them, or any of 'major' characters, and you risk pissing off the readers. It's kind of a tightrope. I don't envy J.K. having to make any of those decisions. I admit that if I had written them one of the major three would've had to die. I think it's pretty unrealistic that Harry, Ron, Hermione, Hagrid, most of the teachers, and most of the familiar second-string student characters (like Luna, Neville, Seamus, etc.) made it through alive.

While Lupin, Madeye and Tonks, three able bodied and well trained wizards got nixed.

The epilogue would have been better served if it was about rebuilding, and maybe some Harry/Teddy.... reestablishing the godfather/son story line would've been more natural.

It's like JKR was just in a hurry to finish it off.
