of overstuffing myself on fish and mutton fried in palm oil,
swiftly followed by a month with travis eating everything we could find for free,
including the star of the show: Travis' mom's cheesy-beef,
I'm moving back into vegitarianism,
and it feels delicious.
The big kicker that finally pushed me over the edge was driving around for hours with Travis in rural wisconsin after months in Africa and seeing acre upon acre of unharvested corn. After the stark dusty savanna of Senegal, any swath of green edible vegitation like that was jaw-dropping, and I remarked idly, "My god, you could feed a small country with that." And travis in his significantly larger Wisconsin-wisdom responded, "Well kinda, but that actually is all for cattle. No one's eating any of this." It killed me, just killed me, so much fertile land, basically going to waste so that I and my compatriots can gorge ourselves on significantly more than our healthy daily allowance of meat.
That topped off with a David Sedaris story about shooting a pig. I realised, if I'm that upset by the shooting of a pig, I really shouldn't be enjoying his baconny goodness.
I'm not against the consumption of meat at all, nor will I ever tell another person not to, unless said person is my patient and is unhealthy because of it. But as I don't like it much, I'm avoiding it when I can. And if anyone ever asked, I'd tell them most americans eat way too much meat and we're raping our fertile land because of it, but until then, personal choice. When I go to travis' family's house for an all-american meal, I'll eat it, and whenever some kind soul offers it to me, I will happily accept their generous gift, but thusfar not eating it on my own, is so lovely. Last night was baked squash and apples with an ear of corn and eggplant topped with a parmesian, garlic and walnut sauce all bought at the farmer's market. mmm....
Ok, this is all, just had to share my joy in tastey cheap homemade food.
Love and luck.
