I think my problem with Shaw is that it muddies up what was a really poignant part of Magneto's origin. Suddenly, it was not nazis who tortured him and killed his mother, but another mutant. Not that he didn't still have reason to be angry at non-mutants, but I found that aspect of the story lost some resonance for me.
Actually I also like how well young Charles's character traits were tied to his powers - both his cockiness/confidence and his empathy seemed based in his knowing what was going on in people's heads around him.
