These forlorn and shuttered two squares and main streets hurt my heart so. Is the issue online shopping? Megamarkets at the edges of town? Declining population?
I love main streets and town centres, and lament thier demise.
All UK High Streets are in decline due to online shopping, but Poole has definitely been hit much harder than, say, Dorchester.
Unlike Dorchester, which has always had a lot of independent stores, Poole was a chain store town, and when the chains moved to shopping malls, the High Street was allowed to become run down. Eventually a critical mass was reached, and Poole stopped being a place people went to shop. And now I'm guessing it's high rents and high business rates that stop the High Street from regenerating as a place of quirky little shops.
It breaks my heart a bit to see the old working town vanishing bit by bit. None of the places being demolished are particularly historic - scruffy old tin huts, workshops, derelict pubs, boatyards and timberyards - but they're the places that gave the town its character...

I was a little disappointed with the lack of fog, but still, towns are always a bit atmospheric if you explore early before the crowds are out.

LOL. Yeah, you could definitely use Poole High Street as a location in your zombie apocalypse movie...
