I moved the guest queen size mattress into our room and made it a babysafe sleeping nest. It's not meant to contain him, just be safe for sleeping. I padded the walls with foam mats after the first night on the mattress when I heard him roll over and klunk his head into the wall. I kept the pack'n'play handy because it's still good for when I can put him down asleep. The mattress is for when I nurse him to sleep and can then get up without having to move him or worry he's going to roll off the big bed.
I took apart his play yard and made it into a z shape with right angles (dunno how else to describe it), so one end piece is between the mattress and the wall, the middle section is between the mattress and the pack'n'play, and the other end comes around the pack'n'play. The space between the fence and the big bed is my escape route out of bed so I don't have to clamber over Scott in the night.
