Well, I am a shy person myself - hence, I became a teacher... :)
Still, if you are too shy to look people in the eyes, you can at least talk to them. If someone shouts thank you thank you thank you like mad at me several times, I can at least mumble "you are welcome" or the like. At least once.
Being shy and nervous is absolutely okay, endearing even. But this is about being polite - and it is not the first time AR hit the red carpet anyway. He should have got used to it by now and as an actor he should know what effect his behaviour patterns and not looking at people have. Namely that he comes across as annoyed, arrogant, ignorant or unfriendly.
The red carpet was not made for training how to run from fans and avoid reacting to them but to make contact. What else would you need a red carpet for? (A silly invention of course - why would artists deserve a red carpet but dustmen not?) Anyway, I give my kudos to those who smile and walk up and down the line of fans, even thanking them that they came. Those come across as nice and open people (Johnny Depp and Tim Burton among them), who know whom they have to thank for their wealth and fame. The others should not go to premieres at all or simply enter through the back door. After all, that's what back doors were invented for.

Back door... poor Alan! *g*... another option would be the creep-through-tunnel made of wire and fabric that children and dogs love to play with...

Was the floor-hypnotizing soooooo bad? Well, let me guess, he didn't come across as the red carpet type then? *LOL*

What video did you watch? Could you please link me there?

No tunnel necessary. I guess he would even LOVE the back door. Of course, there would be no journalists to guarantee him publicity then.
Nah, it was no worse than usual I guess. Few people criticised but some were obviously disappointed.
Here's the vid as posted by catsplay:

Oh well, there was a guy shouting "signation" (sic.)... Ebay seller of autographs or the like?! No wonder Alan Rickman is unnerved and shots him quite a glance!
