Arriving at the door to the hospital, Noah hesitated. He felt strange and awkward, going to visit someone he had hated and bullied constantly for years.

Brittany grabbed his hand and dragged him through the door.

Burt was sitting in a chair next to Kurt’s bed. He smiled softly at Brit when they asked if they could sit with him. His smile looked strained, as if he was doing it for their sakes and not because he wanted too. Puck had seen the same smile on his mom’s face every day for months after his dad left.

Kurt was lying on the bed, his thin chest fluttering softly. His forearms, resting on top of the covers, were covered in white bandages. Noah felt sick. Kurt really had wanted to die. They weren't even friends; the mohawked boy didn't know why he felt the overwhelming urge to rush forward and confirm that Kurt was still alive, still breathing. Confirm that his heart was still beating. To make sure this wasn't some sick dream and he would wake up to a world where Kurt had died.

He didn't want to feel like that. He didn't want to feel anything for the boy in front of him.

After a while Burt took Brittany to the cafeteria to get some food. Puck stayed with Kurt; he wasn't hungry. He couldn't sit still, so he got up and started pacing back and forth in front of the door.

"Could you knock that off? It’s driving me crazy!" groaned Kurt from his bed. Puck stopped in front of the door and leaned against the wall.

"How are you feeling?" he asked, because apparently, that’s what you ask when someone is lying in a hospital bed in front of you after trying to kill themselves. You ask how they’re feeling.

"Better than I expected."

"Oh?"

"I expected to be dead."

It took a while for the words to hit Puck but when they did he couldn't help but cringe. Was life really that bad? His life was pretty screwed up and he wasn't trying to off himself.

"Oh." he repeated; no more words would come.

"Noah?"

"It’s Puck. Call me Puck."

“No," Kurt said simply," Puck is a ridiculous nickname your friends call you. I'm not your friend, so I refuse to call you that." Kurt went quiet again; he didn't want Noah here.

"Noah?"

Puck sighed.

"What?" Kurt closed his eyes and took a breath.

"Could you leave? Your horrendous fashion sense is making my eyes hurt."

Puck couldn't help but smirk at that. That was the Kurt he remembered and maybe he felt a little bit of respect for the way that even though Kurt lying in a hospital bed, he still managed to insult Puck’s clothes.

XxXxX

After dropping Brit back at her house he drove to Mike’s. He and Mike had known each other for all their lives. Their moms had gotten pregnant around the same time. Everyone thought Finn was his best friend but that’s not true. Sure they were pretty close but when it came down to it Mike would always be the first to know anything.

He and Mike were brothers in everything but blood. He cared about Finn but with him there was never the affection he felt for Mike, the overwhelming need to protect his little brother (Puck had been born a measly two days before Mike but hey, that counts).

Their lives were pretty similar. Puck’s mom started drinking because his dad left and Mike’s dad left because his mom started drinking. But one difference was that Puck’s mom stopped drinking as soon as she found out she was pregnant with Samantha.

Puck walked up the driveway and entered the house without knocking; there really wasn't a point, and Mike was most likely playing music so loud that he wouldn't hear the bell. As he walked through the house he spotted Mike’s mom on the couch, passed out again. He walked over and put a blanket over her, and then he made his way up the stairs.

“What the fuck happened in here?" he asked as he took in his surroundings. There were clothes everywhere: on the bed, on the floor, even on top of the computer.

It didn't seem like Mike had heard him. The music was blasting from his iPod docking station at max volume. Puck turned it off and Mike spun around faster than lightning. Puck raised an eyebrow and gestured at the room, silently conveying the question Mike hadn't heard.

"Oh! This?" Mike rushed around shoving clothes into his closet. "I was just looking for my black tee-shirt; you know the one with the batman symbol on it?"

"You mean my batman shirt? The one you 'borrowed' two years ago and never gave back?"

Mike smirked slightly "Yup! That’s the one."

Puck sighed because let’s face it; he was never going to get that shirt back. He walked calmly over to the bed and flipped the cover off the bottom, pulling out the shirt and throwing it at the other boy.

"Why do you need your date shirt anyway?" he asked. Mike was changing into the shirt.

"What?"

"Your date shirt," he said slowly, as if talking to a small child. "You always wear that shirt on dates. Especially early in relationships that your worried about. So spit it out, who have you got your eye on this time."

Mike blushed deeply and stuttered "N-Nobody."

"Cone on, Chang get your head out of your ass. Who. Are. You. Going. Out. With?"

Mike sighed and sat down on the bed.

"Matt." Mike was blushing again.

Puck grinned in victory. This was going to be fun...
