This Is the Story of a Boy
Part III: What It Takes To Be A Man
An Interlude with A Warbler

Trey Pendleton III doesn’t have as much going for him as the other Warblers, as far as he’s concerned. He isn’t handsome and charming like Blaine, or smart like Wes, or confident like David. Until Kurt came to Dalton, Trey was the only contratenor, but even after Kurt leaves, the memory of his voice lingers with the Warblers and Trey’s high notes sound tinny and too falsetto, even in his own ears.

It’s not that Trey doesn’t like Kurt--it’s hard not to like the Kurt they got to know at Dalton--but he can’t help feeling like Kurt never really belonged amongst them, that he took things that didn’t belong to him and then ran away back home with them.

Blaine hasn’t been the same since he and Kurt broke up, and the Warblers are suffering for it. Blaine’s song choices are mopey and his vocals are half-hearted. Their summer meetings are usually a great time for getting a jump on next year’s competition, especially the choreography aspects, but Blaine won’t even dance lately. He just sort of sways in place and has voluntarily given up possible solos. Something has got to give.

When Trey sees Kurt at the mall in Columbus, his first instinct is to rush up and say hello. Then he sees him. Him, the one Blaine suspected might be involved with the whole break-up. The one Blaine is sure was encouraging Kurt to break up with him, pouring all kinds of poison into Kurt’s ear while they played video games and did whatever it is that straight guys do (Trey knows what straight guys do, but Blaine doesn’t, so Trey just let Blaine rant when he needed it).

Or maybe, Trey realizes, what not-so-straight guys do, because he can’t imagine trotting along after any of his friends, not even Blaine, through a shopping mall. Trey is only there because his mother insisted he needed to join her on her shopping excursion and she is the one paying the tuition at Dalton. He’s fairly certain Kurt and the mohawked boy have no such arrangement, so the only possible explanation for that boy trailing along behind Kurt in the body products store is that they are romantically involved.

It only makes sense, really. Blaine’s such a great guy, after all, that the only reason for a break-up would be someone else. Trey’s not attracted to other boys, but if he were, he’s certain he’d be attracted to Blaine. This punk rock Lothario must have seduced Kurt with some sort of wiles or charms, and now all the Warblers are suffering.

Trey can’t wait to get back to Dalton and let Blaine know that he did nothing at all wrong. It was just that Kurt fell prey to temptation. Unfortunate, but certainly nothing within Blaine’s control. Perhaps now, Blaine will cheer up a little and start singing again.
