Kurt suppresses a pleased smile when he puts his phone down. It's Wednesday afternoon. He's been busy for the past three days, but he and Puck talked on the phone for a little bit Monday night, and he knows Puck's been busy, too. Puck had already told Kurt to reserve Saturday, which he'd done.
"What's up?" Finn asks, noticing the smile. They're working together to make dinner, which means that Finn is making salad, and Kurt's doing everything else.
"I have another date on Friday," Kurt responds with a shrug.
"Yeah? That's awesome. Is he picking you up again?"
Kurt purses his lips and picks up his phone again. "I don't know."
want me to pick you up?
He turns back to the sauce on the stove, but doesn't have to wait long before the phone buzzes with a response.
sure
"No, I'm picking him up," Kurt answers calmly.
"It's someone I know, isn't it?" Finn asks, narrowing his eyes. "Otherwise you'd let him pick you up here."
"Maybe, maybe not." Kurt shrugs. "Maybe I just like to drive. Maybe I just want my big backseat." He smirks and Finn blanches, but only slightly. Progress, Kurt reminds himself. He's made a lot of progress.
"Do you have plans for Friday?" he asks after a moment of silence.
"Yeah, yeah. Me and Rachel are going to go see a movie, I think." Finn smiles. "I think Mom and Burt are going to be out late on Friday night, can you…"
"Sure," Kurt quickly agrees. "Just remember they'll be back by eleven, and I'll be back by eleven-thirty even they aren't." While he was still dating Blaine, they'd worked out a system to let each of them have time when no one else was home. Kurt doesn't need reciprocation at the moment, but he figures storing up a little goodwill may come in handy sooner or later.
Like when Finn figures out who he's dating.
He doesn't think Finn will be too upset, but he can't be sure.
Kurt doesn't work on Thursdays, so he spends the morning working on his musical, and then running errands all afternoon, if going shopping can really be considered an errand. Either way, he has lots of time to think.
Most of his thoughts are about Puck.
A few of his thoughts are about Blaine, and what went wrong. He's not sure if Blaine ever felt physically attracted to him. He knows that he spent a lot of his energy pursuing Blaine.
Puck's the one pursuing him. Puck's physically attracted to him. Both of these facts stand out in Kurt's mind as differences, as good differences. It doesn't change that he thinks he and Puck need to develop the relationship carefully, but by the time Kurt parks near Artspace Lima in the evening, he's made a decision.
However far Puck's wanting to go with this relationship or whatever they'll end up calling it, Kurt's going all in.
Some of Kurt's introspective mood from the previous day remains as he works on Friday morning; his dad has to call his name three times to get his attention just after lunch. He spends part of the day thinking about what he's going to wear later, but finally convinces his mind to think about what to cook for dinner. Even though it's family dinner night, Friday's dinner in the summer is all under Kurt's purview. Usually, he decides after visiting the farmers' market the night before, and this Friday is no exception. He knows that Finn and his dad both view the vegetable-heavy meals with some suspicion, so he decides to make homemade pizza with the fresh tomatoes, peppers, basil, and cheese he bought the day before.
The four of them are sitting around the table, happily eating, when Burt asks what Kurt and Finn are doing that evening. "Don't forget, Carole and I will be out most of the night." They exchange a smile, and Kurt smiles slightly, happy to see his dad so happy.
"Rachel and I are going to see a movie," Finn responds first. "Not sure which one. Super 8 sounds cool."
"That's the one that just came out?" Carole enquires, and Finn nods.
"What about you, son," Burt turns to Kurt, who quickly finishes his bite and puts his slice down.
"Yes, I'm going out tonight, too. Not sure where."
Burt looks at him. "What do you mean, you don't know where?"
"Kurt has a date," Finn interjects, tone sing-songy.
"Yeah?" Burt straightens and fixes Kurt with a stare. "You driving?"
"Yes, Dad."
"But you don't know where you're going?"
Kurt shrugs. "He just said to dress casual again." Shit.
"Again?"
Kurt purses his lips; he recognizes that tone. "We went out last Friday. We just went over to the fairgrounds and watched the drive-in movies showing. Finn will tell you, I was back here by 11."
Finn nods eagerly, and Kurt knows Finn wasn't trying to get him in any trouble. "Yeah, Kurt was back by 11, and he'd left a note. So I wouldn't jump to conclusions," he adds ruefully. "But Kurt won't say who he's dating, yet." He grins at Kurt, and Kurt can't really stay mad at his brother.
"We know him?" Burt asks, voice still stern.
Kurt nods slowly. "Yes. But like I told Finn, I'd like to see where this is going before I say anything else, okay?"
"We do know him!" Finn celebrates. "This is awesome." He turns his puppy-dog eyes on Kurt. "Can I at least tell Rachel? I know you'll tell her soon anyway."
Kurt sighs and shakes his head, resigned. "Fine. Tell her I'll call her tomorrow or Sunday."
"Just be home by curfew, Kurt."
"I will be, Dad."
After Kurt picks up Puck, Puck suggests they could go see a movie, or they could go out to the Motorsports Park and watch a few races, then go get ice cream. Kurt decides on the second option, and they settle in on the stands with a soft pretzel for Kurt, and a corn dog for Puck. They're holding hands again, and once they finish eating, their arms find their way around each other.
"Having fun?"
"Yeah." Kurt smiles. "This is good." He pauses and bites his lip. "Listen, um. You don't have to come, but you're welcome to… I won't be around next Saturday, and maybe next Friday."
"Yeah? Where are you going?"
"Columbus. Pride's next weekend. I'm definitely going to go down on Saturday for the parade and festival, but I haven't decided about Friday."
Puck's making a face that Kurt's pretty sure means he's thinking. "What's it like?"
"I don't know," Kurt admits. "I haven't gone before. There's a parade on Saturday at noon, and music, and lots of GLBTQ people." He laughs. "Obviously."
"You think it'll be fun?"
"Yeah, I do." He sighs a little. "It'll be nice not to be such a minority, even if it's only for a day or two."
Puck nods and turns his body sideways, facing Kurt. "You want me to come?"
Kurt nods, not quite meeting his eyes. "If you want." He traces his finger absently up and down Puck's forearm. "I don't want to push-"
Puck cuts him off with a quick kiss. "I'd love to. I can't go Friday, because I'm scheduled to work until six, but Saturday sounds great."
"Okay," Kurt smiles, and initiates another kiss. He knows they're taking a little risk, because they're in public in Lima, but his dad's known a lot of these guys for years, and he's probably safer at Limaland than most places.
Burt's convinced Carole to go watch the races at Limaland for date night, over her objections. He figures he's due, since he went to see that pirate movie with her the week before. After they've picked a spot near some buddies of his, Carole begs off to go to the refreshment stand. While he's sitting alone, he hears a few people nearby muttering about "damn fags," but he just raises his eyebrows and glares, and they flush and look away. One of them mutters "Sorry." Burt smirks because he knows no one there wants to be refused service at the shop.
Carole returns just a few minutes later, a pleased smile on her face. "I know where Kurt is."
Burt frowns and pushes his hat up on his head before resettling it. "What?"
"On his date," Carole explains. "I saw them down there, but they didn't see me." She giggles. "They were a little occupied."
Occupied? Oh. The muttering. Kurt's always been a little more open around the car people than he probably should, though Burt thinks it wasn't a conscious thing until recently. "Who was it? Do we really know him?"
Carole nods. "Yes… it's Puck. Noah."
"Puckerman?"
"Yeah," Carole confirms. "I didn't know-but Noah's always been one to play his cards close to his chest."
"Hmph." Burt's not sure what to think, but he'd rather know who Kurt's with, and Kurt didn't seem inclined to tell him anytime soon. Carole seeing them was the best thing, really.
"So, what's new since we talked at lunch?" Rachel teases.
"Noth--oh!"
"Oh, what?" Rachel's smile grows wider. "What is it?"
"Kurt's dating someone."
"Dating? But-not Blaine again?" She makes a face, and Finn can't help but match it.
"No, no, I asked that too." He half-grins. "He won't tell us, not even Burt, but he did tell Burt it was someone we know." Finn rolls his eyes a little. "He wouldn't even tell me that!"
"What else?" Rachel's eyes are bright, and Finn gets lost in them for a few moments.
"Oh! Um, that he wants to see where it's going, and this guy's not out."
"Well, obviously, Finn, the only other guy we know that's out is Blaine, and he still doesn't live in Lima."
"Oh. Yeah. Yeah, well. But who do you think it is?"
"Is it someone in New Directions?"
Finn's sure he probably looks-what was the word Kurt used? oh, yeah-poleaxed. "I don't know. I guess I sort of meant that when I asked if it was someone we know."
Rachel laughs, and Finn lets himself listen to it happily. "Oh, Finn," she says, but her voice is full of affection, not exasperation. "I'm going to have to come over and-"
"Oh, yeah," Finn interjects hurriedly. "He said he'd call you tomorrow or Sunday."
Rachel raises an eyebrow. "Oh, he will, will he?"
And Finn worries a little for his brother, because his girlfriend isn't as scary as Quinn, but she can still be a little intimidating.
