Mandatory Rant
I suppose it is a requirement that every LiveJournal columnist dust off the old soapbox, step up to the microphone and rant. dihrdnintndokid has already met his contactable obligation, so I guess it's my turn.
I get so fucking pissed off every time I hear the latest scheme, plot, or shenanigan to stick it Big Oil.
May 19 was yet another futile plan to stick it to Big Oil. An Email message was circling around stating that all American drivers shouldn't buy gasoline on May 19th. This single act would end the Big Oil tyranny and bring forth a new era of philosophy, science and art.
Shut the Fuck Up
Go ahead, ban together and don't pay for gas for one day. Will this usher in a new era? Nope...cause Big Oil has already gotten their money from BP, TEXACO, EXXON, 7-11, SHELL, and various other gas stations. You forget, you obtain your gasoline through a middle-man. By banning together and boycotting gasoline for one day, only the middle man suffers not Big Oil.
Let's face it; regardless of how much the price of gasoline goes up, we will pay for it. Price breaks the $2 mark: consumers bitch, throw a fit, and whine till they're blue in the face. Yet..we line up at the gas station. The price passes $2.50: bitch, moan, and whine till we're blue, however, we still pay for gas. The price for a gallon could reach $5 and yet we will pay for it. $10 a gallon...yep...more bitching....even more whining but you will pay for it.
I don't like this anymore than you do, but how do we fight back? You know the answer...Hybrids. I know...I know...hybrids are __________ (insert your own adjective here). I want my next car to run on 2 systems: Gasoline and more Gasoline. By the rate gasoline is going, I can tolerate the hybrids...maybe even learn to adore them.
That is how we stick it to Big Oil, by buying hybrids. Not by banning together and boycotting gasoline for one day. Not by sacrificing small furry animals to some obscure Druidish god that's long forgotten, or any other lame brain, foolish, and utterly ridiculous plan.
Cut off the head, and the body will die.
Buy a Hybrid, then and ONLY THEN do you stick it to Big Oil.
