Itineray For the UK in Summer of 2017

May 08, 2017 09:57

I will arrive in Heathrow, London, at 10:00 P.M. on Friday, July 7th, on Qater Airlines Flight #QR005 (from Doha).

I want to spend the 8th and the 9th showing some Egyptians from here in Alexandria certain of the cultural sites in London, such as the Tate Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, the British Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, and perhaps they'll be time for a play. These Egyptians know the shopping districts, mainly, and are not familiar with the cultural scene in London.  During those two days, I shall stay in a Hilton Hotel in London, because I have amassed many "Hilton Honors" credits.

From the 10th of July through the 22nd, I will be either in Wales with Jacquelyn Dexter, or in transit to Wales (on a train--with a British Railways Pass?) If it's possible I'd like to revisit this place on the way to Wales, or show it to Mrs. Dexter, if she had been with me in London after the 9th: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apethorpe_Palace

I first saw Apethorpe Palace eight years ago when the restoration work was being started by British Heritage, and the amount of work that needed to be done was phenomenal. Reports are that much has been accomplished, and that's good, because this particular pile is extremely important to English history of the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods. Certain detalis of the restoration actually prove some long-suspected but never verified facts about the monarchs who lived there as itinerants, Elizabeth I and James I. (I even bought a book on the restoration project and the history of the place: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0300148704/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 .)

In Wales, I will be with Jacquelyn Dexter for about two weeks, and will be her houseguest and/or her camping partner. I know nothing about camping at sites like the Welsh seashore, but I trust Ms. Dexter to ensure that I don't get pneumonia! It would be nice to see St. David's Cathedral: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_David%27s_Cathedral, as well as Powis Castle (particularly for its associations with India): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powis_Castle

I must be in Oxford, at Mansfield College, by 4:00 P.M. on Sunday, July 23rd, for my teachers' seminar, "Shakespeare in History," which will last until noon on Sunday, July 30th. I can get there by train, if Mrs. Dexter will help me to get a British Railways Seasonal Pass. While I'm staying in Oxfordshire, I'd like to get out of the university town, to see this place, which is associated with Edmund Campion, whom I venerate: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonor_Park

After that, however, I do not leave the United Kingdom until August 12th, when I have to be to Heathrow London by 7:00 P.M. that Sunday, to travel back to Alexandria, Egypt, on Qatar Airlines Flight #QR002 (to Doha).

If I have the right British Railways Seasonal Pass, which I once had before, I think I can get around the United Kingdom on the rail system, and maybe even get into the Scottish Highlands, as far as Inverness, before I must be back in London, for my airplane trip back to the Middle East.
