Daniel opened his eyes and saw he was wearing a gray suit.
"Well," he thought, "for a dream, this is pretty normal," but then he looked up and saw the caterpillar smoking the hookah. The caterpillar with the short-brimmed hat and sunglasses. It smiled at him, gold tooth flashing in the spotlights of the room. Were they even in a room?
"Good, you're here," said the caterpillar, smoke issuing from its mouth in the shapes of x's, o's and even a s.
"I'm dreaming," said Daniel.
"Of course you are," said the caterpillar. "Listen, you gotta go find Carlos. He's gone somewhere again, and we've got a gig soon."
The words Carlos and gone somewhere made Daniel's stomach feel sour, even if this was just a dream

"Dammit, Sam!" cried Daniel, but now he was on a road, and the mushroom was merely a speck in a crack in a tuft of grass. Dizzy, he looked up and saw trees, dark trees casting shadows in the light of the moon. Two moons - one full and one crescent, breathing at him.
"Hey," said the crescent moon, "So are you Alice or the rabbit?"
"Fuck!" yelled Daniel, staggering backwards. The crescent moon materialized into a grin, a wide grin on the face of a sleek blonde cat.
"Did I scare you? Sorry."
"You're always scaring me, Paul."
"Awww," said the cat. "You say that like I actually care what you think."
"Listen, Sam says I gotta find Carlos, so I don't have time for--"
"What if I knew where Carlos was? Would you have time then?" The cat took a few mincing steps across a branch and disappeared as though swallowed up by the darkness itself.
"Wait, where are you going? Do you really know where he is?"
The cat appeared some feet away, lounging carelessly on a branch. "Manners, manners! This is so unlike you."

Now the darkness seemed to encroach from every direction, even swallowing up the moon itself, so he ran, ran like he'd never run in a dream before, or at least not since he was a child, until, just as the cat had said, he came to a great castle ringed in spotlights. Unfortunately the castle was also ringed by a moat and had absolutely no door to speak of, so he concluded with annoyance that the only way to enter was through the garden on one side. And of course the garden had to be a labyrinth
