Position Description for Peer Education Advocate

Program Description:

The Adolescent Prevention Education Programs (APEP) at Children’s National aims to improve the health outcomes for teens in Metropolitan Washington, DC. Our programs and services, housed in the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine, empower youth to develop the goals, skills and strengths to safely navigate adolescence and make informed, responsible choices. Programs include Teens Against the Spread of AIDS (TASA), Teens With Negative Tests (TNT), Teen Life Clubs (TLC) and Teen Talk and services such as waiting room education and community based workshops. Job Description:
The primary function of the Peer Education Advocate is to coordinate TASA and TNT, two APEP peer education programs. This includes planning, implementation and evaluation; supervising volunteers, and working with community partners for ongoing programming needs. The Advocate will need to recruit youth into the programs, assist with curriculum development/design and facilitate health education workshops.
The Peer Education Advocate will also work with the Community Health Coordinator to assist in co-facilitation of the TLC program and its alumni programs. Because all of the youth programs take place after school, the incumbent will need to maintain flexible hours. There may be weekend commitments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Be creative, energetic and enthusiastic about working with youth and representing youth concerns
Develop and expand our community partnerships as a source of potential volunteers and funding support
Assist with the development of evaluation tools, approved by the hospital’s Internal Review Board to support outcomes-based program evaluations
Professionally represent and promote the programs to various stakeholders
Minimum Qualifications:
· Masters degree in Public Health- or its equivalent.
· Knowledge about and comfort with early adolescent health issues, including comprehensive sex education, HIV and pregnancy prevention, and youth violence
· Enjoys and is comfortable working with adolescents
· Excellent organizational, communication, facilitation, and presentation skills
· The ability to advocate for the needs of at risk and HIV infected youth and programs to meet their needs
· Outstanding problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills
· Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
· Spanish proficiency a plus.

· At least 1 year of direct experience with minority adolescents, especially high-risk and/or school-aged youth
· Ability to multi-task, work independently and prioritize schedule to get work done on tight deadlines
· Flexible schedule, including ability and willingness to commit to evening or weekend activities
· Plans to work in next position for at least 3 years
