To UPDATE FURTHER....pu_dunk_a_dunkJanuary 4 2006, 18:51:35 UTC
We're hearing word that Z104 has fired all of its staff and will be switching formats at some point before the end of the week. The tip comes from a local musician (Chris, from Full Minute of Mercury) who was scheduled to record there this week, and whose taping got cancelled in lieu of the news.
On air, the station seemed to be maintaining itself as "Z104 Washington's Modern Music," and the sounds of Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" indicated status quo; but nary a human voice was heard for about 20 minutes, just songs and pre-recorded messages. That was, of course, until the announcement was made moments ago: "As of noon today, 104.1 will become Washington's Home of Classical Music, WGMS."
It was right about this time last year that another local-music-friendly station bit the dust. We still miss you, WHFS.

I guess all of us in the Z104 demographic (I include myself, even with the age difference) are now listening to iPods and satellite radio, and not as much to old school terrestrial radio. Radio stations have to go where the bucks are, and that's not with us any more. Classical and Spanish-language demographics are more likely to be listening to regular radio. It sucks, but we can't have it all.
I was so mad to see and find out about this yesterday! My sucky old car's radio can't get chit for stations. This was the only decent one I could get! NOW what am I gonna do?! :(

Farewell, Z104, and hello WGMS.
