The Herxheimer Reaction is especially nasty for Lyme. When your immune system attacks Lyme, those nasty little spirochetes will release the toxins in an attempt to take out your white blood cells with them.

I also Very Strongly Suspect that your "spider bite" wasn't a spider, but the deer tick that gave you Lyme. Not everyone gets the bulls-eye rash. And the fever you got when all of this started is textbook Lyme.
Man, now it all makes sense! (Particularly given the joint pain.) I couldn't figure out from your writing what it must be. No wonder you missed work! ugh...I hope you're back on your feet soon. But it's just going to take a while before you're feeling like yourself again.

I have a cousin who lives in Old Lyme, CT, which gave the condition its name. Wouldn't want to be on the local tourist board.
