Just like how Nanna used to make it...- La Nonna

Apr 30, 2009 00:33

Given that my in-laws have arrived, I'm doing what I do best when they're here. And that's keeping to myself. Not that I mean to be anti-social or anything, but after a long day at work I just want to avoid as much noise and cacophony as possible and just relax in blissful solitude either with myself or my baby. With their chronic addiction to Taiwanese game shows of which I absolutely can't stand, spending time outside is not really conducive to my relaxing.

And so I figured I may as well hide away in the room and clear more posting back log. Anyway, this was a restaurant that we went to for dinner last weekend. It's situation in the middle of some residential block just off Sixth Avenue. Kinda odd place for an Italian restaurant if you ask me. The place is called La Nonna, which is Italian for Grandmother. With a name like that, one expect certain things. Grandmothers are associated with good ol' fashioned cooking and as such this place I was hoping would live up to the expectation.

On a completely separate note, why do Grandmothers always escape all the jokes? Mum jokes are all the rage and always a guaranteed source of cheap laughs, especially if the recipient takes offense to it. But why do Grandmothers, whom would present an even cheaper and more defenseless source of humour, escape this treatment? Who knows... I guess maybe "Hey Steve, I did your Grandma in the *insert cavity* last night and she loved every bit of it!" doesn't have the same ring as saying "your mom". *shrugs*

What? Inappropriate? Crazy talk! Anyway, this restaurant came quite heavily recommended by a friend whom lived right near it and so off we went. The verdict? Pretty darn good I have to say. The restaurant really does seem out of place but I'm glad it's there as it's only a stones throw from where we'll be moving in a couple of months. It's a small but very tastefully decorated place that seemed to be mostly patroned by ex-pats.

Service was warm and wonderful and the interior decoration cozy. It's a nice intimate place that is a great place to go for a date. The service was so good the waiter would probably happily distract your partner upon your request whilst you slip a Rohypnol tablet or 10 into her drink. Oh wait... Rohypwhat?

We ordered a number of dishes and they all were sensational. They all also had something in common, and that was their sheer simplicity. The entrees especially were all very simple creations but yet oh so tasty. I guess, that's the way your Grandmother would have probably made them.

The pan seared Mozzarella wrapped in Parma Ham is definitely something I'll be replicating at home!!! It was so simple and yet so tasty... like Forrest Gump giving out free chocolates. Same went for the Goats Cheese Bruschetta and the Beef Carpaccio (which was actually a bit too thin IMHO).

The mains were also very simple but flavourful all the same. I really enjoyed the black truffle Fettucini and that's something else I'll be attempting to replicate at home. I ordered Pizza myself which was wonderfully thin. Now as much as I know I really should have ordered something other than a damn pepperoni pizza, I just couldn't resist. Though it was thin, the base was just a tad soggy due to all the oily goodness from the salami. But from all reports the other pizzas that aren't dripping with oil are lovely and crisp underneath.

Dessert was pretty average. The chocolate mousse was the richest chocolate mousse I've had in recent memory, and I don't mean that in a good way. Given that I'm not a huge chocolate man, because I you know... prefer women and stuff, I couldn't take much more than a bite of the mousse. And it was room temperature, not even cold! Argh... way to chocolately for me! The other two desserts were nothing to write home about either. Grandma was probably too puffed from cooking everything else and just served these out of the box.

Anyway, I really really do recommend this place if you feel like a spot of Italian and wish for a more intimate and less noisy environment. Anyway, it's almost the long weekend!!! Unfortunately I have to go to Melaka (argggghhhh!!!) to visit my Grandparents. And to clarify the "Argh!" is for Melaka, not my Grandparents. Melaka is just so hot and boring as hell.... sigh...
